My piece for the @fbczine this year! Everyone's stuff in this is incredible, and it was both a huge honor and really fun to be part of it.
Transcript/image descriptions beneath the cut:
āThe Oldest House is not haunted. Not in a conventional sense.ā āWhile we have witnessed Altered Items that behave like the concept of poltergeists,ā (Marshall and Salvador watch the Floppy Disk levitate items,) āafterimages of victims of AWEs,ā (Alice approaches Estevez and Langston with a photo of Alan,) āeven old calls left on the Hotline,ā (Trench listens to the Hotline with Northmoorās silhouette behind him,) āthe FBC has yet to prove the concrete existence of āghostsā.ā (Darling walks through an empty office at night.) āBut that doesnāt mean that we donāt feel like someone else is here with us.ā āUnscientific as it may sound,ā (Darling looks to the side worried with a slight blue glow on him,) āwe are not alone here.ā (Pope calls out to Darling from behind, startling him.)
āThe most obvious culprit is the House itself. The Research Department has long debated if the Oldest House is an undescribed form of life.ā (Darling listens to Trench talk as they walk through the Mail Room.) āAfter all, it grows and changes.ā (Portions of the wall begin to shift in front of Trench and Darling.) āIt maintains internal consistency.ā (The walls continue to shift around them.) āIt even responds to select stimuli through the rituals.ā (Trench halts the shift at a control point.) āThe last time I talked to Raya, she suggested that the shifts are akin to an immune response. Though she also referred to both the Mold and humans as āinvasive speciesā.ā (In Central Research, Underhill shows Darling a container with a Mold sample while people in hazmat suits set up a barrier behind them.) āI took it as a joke at the time, but maybe sheās right.ā (Darling walks away from Underhill, waving.) āWe assume on some level that the House allowed us in, but from its perspective, we might just be an infestation. Or a haunting.ā (Darling alone in Central Research.)
āSo, it could be the Houseās presence that weāre feeling.ā (Trench looks down on Central Executive from the upper floor.) āOr it could be the Board that you often complain about, keeping an eye on us.ā (Ahti pokes the Clog coming out of a pipe with a mop.) āOr another entity weāve overlooked.ā (A pair of rangers present a blurry image of the Former on a projector.) āBut Iām worried itās something worse than that. Something we brought here.ā (Darling shows Trench a report with a graph of red and blue energy waves. Trench grabs Darling by the lapels and shouts at him. Trench walks away from Darling with a red tint to his glasses.) āAnd not justā¦what we talked about. Or what I tried to talk to you about.ā āThe FBC is not a place for regrets.ā (Darling shows a young Dylan the pram in the Panopticon while Trench stands to the side, smoking.) āDecisions have to be made. And decisions have consequences.ā (Darling finds an older Dylan splattered with blood, standing over a pair of bodies.) āPersonal feelings cannot get in the way. Not when the stakes are so high.ā (Marshall and Darling argue while Trench listens.) āAnd thereās more work to be done.ā (Darling sits in his lab looking traumatized.)
āBut I donāt regret this.ā (Darling walks up the stairs to Dimensional Research, looking over his shoulder.) āEven if it meant going behind your back in the end.ā (Darling looks up at Hedron.) āAnd now knowing theā¦side effects.ā (A disheveled but happy Darling looks down at a finished HRA while a Geiger counter shows high radiation.) āThe HRAs work. The resonance level is safe! I just got aā¦higher level of exposure.ā (Four panels of Darling, increasingly more disheveled and less clothed with a growing blue glow on him: Darling showing an HRA to Marshall; Darling taking his own readings; Darling leaning against a lab wall, carrying a bunch of papers; and Darling collapsed on the lab floor.) āI took notes on my condition for as long as I could, but itās a moot point now.ā āDonāt worry about me. I got what I wanted, didnāt I?ā (Three televisions in the Oceanview Hotel showing Darling dazed on his knees, looking up, then standing up.) āBut I canāt stay.ā (Darling walks out of sight on the TV screen.) āIām sorry, Zach. But if youāve become one of the ghosts haunting the House,ā (Jesseās hand reaches for the Hotline.) āI canāt haunt it with you.ā (Jesse listens to the Hotline with Trenchās silhouette behind her.)
Foundation, my piece for @fbczine!
It was so much fun to conceptualize and draw, Control's Foundation has always presented such a striking visual, and I was very glad I could draw it for this year's zine.
My final piece for the cover of the FBCzine vol 2!
It was such an honour being asked to do the cover for the project, and I had a blast figuring out the little details in this one. As soon as I knew the theme was the connected Remedy universe, under the banner of 'The Oceanview Motel & Casino', I knew what I wanted to bring.
Trying to make handwriting not look like mine was a challenge, and doing something non-figure based was also a great learning experience for me!
If you haven't checked out thos project or the previous one, rock on over to @fbczine and have a peek! The team is lovely and the artists and writers put up some incredible work both years!
