2020 Books. ⋙ From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
“You are so incredibly violent.” He dipped his chin and whispered, “It still turns me on.”
A scream of fury tore out of me as I jabbed my elbow out and up, snapping Hawke’s head back. “Dammit,” he said, coughing—no, laughing. He was laughing. “Didn’t change what I just said.”
I’ve got seven words for you: sarah j maas but make it s p i c y
I can’t really explain to you why these books have literally kept me until 4 am. I mean, as expected, high fantasy will grab my attention like a moth to a flame, and miss armentrout very much caught my attention.
The first book opens with our main character, Poppy in the midst of doing something she’s not supposed to. Already, we get little insight on our girl: she likes to have test the limits and boy does that carry throughout the series. By the time we meet Hawke, we already know: a charming, dark badboy with a smirk (this is not surprising because he has the internet in a panty-twisting frenzy--well-deserved I might add). Their banter was... cute. Juvenile, but cute.
The one (or couple) things I don’t like about the book is that it really, truly is like a Sarah j Maas book. Now, considering I have read both books in one night sittings each, I’m not complaining but it did make it kind of predictable. I won’t say just how, but expect an almost play-by-play of what happens in any one of Sarah j Maas’ series.
I would also like to add that I found the characters to be a little on the flat side. Their motivations and desires and goals were either not discussed or felt short and don’t even get me started on book two. I just felt like every single character wanted something but just not... enough. And that’s very disappointing. As well as the second book, I read the back cover and I was so excited to learn more about the realms and the world’s and the histories and other characters and the interactions between other characters when all I really got was; Poppy versus person 1, Poppy against this group and these oppositions were used to explain history.
In all, I’m excited for book 3 because it’s still a story that falls right in line with the kinds of books that I like, but I’m hoping for less impromptu “lovemaking” scenes (to keep it PG) and more action.
