“How are my girls?” The question is asked blindly as he enters the room, books lodged between his arms. “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long mon amour.”

12. — stranger
They had once been thick as thieves; he had felt more for her than he ever had for his own wife and queen. But she had made her choice and left for her artist, leaving him bitter and brokenhearted.
Years had passed since her supposed death and now her daughter was to marry his son. He looked upon the living woman who had been his closest friend and they could not have been better strangers.
Perhaps they had always been meant to be so.
“Rosemonde...”

“Oh yes, ma vie, absolutely the worst. How dare you pay proper attention to your daughter and sing her to sleep so I will not have to get up and how dare you play with her.” Shaking her head at his seeming insecurity, she approached him whilst rocking a slightly fussy Belle in her arms and reached to take his hand, squeezing it gently. “Maurice, mon coeur, you are not a horrible father. You didn’t even do anything wrong, she’s just being cranky because she refused to nap and then she turns to tears for the slightest thing. Now please hold our petite for me so that I can make some lunch?”
“It’s not that Rosemonde,” The anxiety of parenthood had met Maurice from the moment Rosemonde shared the news, and though he felt as blessed as ever to have a family like this he felt as though there was more he should be doing. What kind of life was left for his girls if he could not provide them with the best?
“I just wish there was more I could do for you both, more than this.” He gestured around the room. “You both deserve so much more.”
