"I aced it, though, didn't I?" Jack refuses to answer the question. He's walking me back from my last Club eval, which I did, in fact, totally ace. I'm probably the best at concealment out of all of the recruits, and I didn't even have to disappear (for very long). Jack is just trying not to smile, reading something or another on a tablet instead of looking either at me or where he's going. "I did. You just don't want to admit it. I'm your favorite Club candidate, aren't I."
"You, my young friend, are a Diamond candidate, and I don't pick favorites." Did he really say we were friends? "I have my eye on more than one recruit for my division, I even had a failed one I liked." I swallow hard. We haven't seen any of the failed recruits since their last eval. I asked Jack once and he said Ace is the one who takes care of them. I'm pretty sure that means execution, like Alice said was in the contract. I don't like to think about stuff like that, but I guess I have to remember this is a crime syndicate and killing people is kind of in a Spade's job description. Speaking of which, the evaluation I'm heading to next is our final one, and it's for the Spade division.
"Remind me why I have to go to this again? I'm a square-cut Diamond, I don't need Spade stuff."
"It's like school. You have to learn science even if you're going to go into theater. We look at everyone for everything in case a division doesn't fit them. Eleven moved around between all three before settling in with me. It's just the way things are done."
"Does it matter if I fail or not?"
"Not going to answer that. Just do your best. Here you are, go sit down, I've got duties elsewhere." He keeps walking past the door I'm to go in and waves over his shoulder without looking back as he continues down the hallway. He's so cool.
