Movies I Just Watched: Fear, Inc. (2016)

A horror-comedy about a group of friends being stalked in one of their homes by masked intruders. The main guy, Joe, is a horror movie junkie, who calls a shady company called Fear, Inc. The company specializes in bringing your greatest fears to life, basically turning your life into a horror movie (albiet a stalker-slasher type movie).

From inviting them into his life, Joe spends the movie thinking all the terrors and murders around him are actually part of the game set up by Fear, Inc., and his not taking things seriously and calling out horror tropes from other movies is part of the comedy.

The first half of the movie is entertaining in a satirical kind of way. Then the movie starts throwing predictable twists at you in succession and suddenly it wants you to take things seriously... except you can't because you can see the next twist coming. The energy of the movie drains about 2/3rds of the way through and never gets it back. If they wanted to go the comedic route, then they should have REALLY gone for it. Here, they throw in a few references to Friday the 13th, Saw, and Scream, and expect Joe's genre savvy and aloofness to be funny. For a time it is, but then you realize that's all the filmmakers got... The ending though, made me smile.

The acting is decent. For some reason Abigail Breslin has a brief cameo role... The music, cinematography, and editing are all satisfactory, but not exceptional.
