So I'm still really mad about last night's BSG thing
So I'm going to just rant for a bit here and just bear with me. Feel free to skip over this if you're not invested.
So there's these people who come and hang out at a friend's every week and they make me really uncomfortable a lot because they're almost intentionally abrasive to me personally every week? and TL;DR about last night I made this one dickhole cry a bit after not backing down about BSG (they were dumb oh no I feel victimized by you being angry at a thing I said tears so I don’t feel bad at all) but I’m literally the only person who won’t back down when they’re being gross.
And it was just a huge litany of grossness.
So someone brought up how they want to watch BSG at the next Friday thing and I was like “hell yeah” and then this one girl named Rachael was like “ugh no that show is so stupid.” And this other guy named Tony said “yeah it’s super shitty” and you could just hear the collective gasp as everyone else in the room turned to me because I take that show very seriously and I owe so much of who I am to my experience with that show and I was speechless for a second and Rachael was like “no really I’m sorry you like that crap it’s so silly like ‘oh no my boyfriend is dead because I passed his flight test because I’m fucking him’ ugh she’s so whiny” and Tony was like “yeah she's really whiny and it’s so boring like me and Rachael watched two seasons and nothing happens they just complain about their problems”
And then when I started saying “ok well let me tell you right now that you’re entirely wrong” Rachael got upset and was like “no that show is just boring and I don’t understand why people like it” and then her boyfriend, Ashton, who is a GIANT DOUCHE came up to me and was like “look dude nobody cares at all about what you’re saying so just shut up” even though there were two other people (Fearezen and the host of the party) backing me up in the room and two others (Duverlierst and Crockerjames42) who texted me later saying “I’m glad you called them out” so I guess he’d rather put someone down on a personal level than question his girlfriend’s dubious analysis of a CULTURAL MILESTONE. And it's not like this is the first time he's done something like this. He's consistently shutting people down (mainly me which may be why I'm taking this personally) in order to prevent people from arguing about stuff which, ok dude you don't like confrontation but instead of being silencing maybe you should confront the fact that your girlfriend says a lot of questionable stuff about things that people really like?
And then as I was leaving Tony came up to me and was like “I’m sorry you like a shitty show but your taste must be different than mine” and I was like “well then why didn’t you start out acknowledging the fact that your preconceptions of the show limited your enjoyment” and he was like “I just had fun teasing you about it” and I said "what part of teasing someone is fun to you?" and that’s when I tore in and we argued for like an hour about why the whole situation is fucked up and he didn’t want to apologize for being an asshat and that’s when he started crying.
Yeah. I have to deal with them every week but it’s only an annoyance until they shit on something which has informed the entire scope of my media consumption and has helped define who I am as a person, not to mention simultaneously being one of the best made pieces of television ever and redefining how we think about the entire medium.
And to touch back on their arguments? If you ever put down a show or a character (especially a female character) for being WHINY or for complaining too much you need to just stop and concede your entire argument because wow hey fictional characters' entire lives are pretty fucked up and I want to know what level of mourning you've arbitrarily established as "acceptable" in reaction to genocide you heartless and misogynistic bastard.
