Movie Review | Feast (Gulager, 2005)

I threw this on because the runtime was reasonable for a work night and I was craving a 2000s nostalgia hit. Now, I didn’t actually see this before. I definitely saw the DVD at the HMV though. I don’t think I really considered buying it. I may have picked it up in my hand though. I may have even looked up the price online at one point. I thought Henry Rollins was in the second one instead of the first, but I think I confused it with Wrong Turn. I didn’t watch that one either. They both had a similar colour scheme on the DVD cover, I think. I think the consensus on the now defunct Rotten Tomatoes forums I used to frequent was positive but not ecstatic. For both this and Wrong Turn. I’m sure you’re all enjoying this trip down memory lane. Uhhh yeah, nostalgia. Shoot it in my veins.

Anyway, this is directed by John Gulager, whose father Clu you will likely know from Return of the Living Dead and who plays one of the only likeable characters here. I’m sure John has seen his old man’s movie, and he would have done well to pay attention to how that movie, even when setting up its characters as cartoons, gives them room to surprise us and show us their humanity. This sets up each character through smug, mocking title cards, and largely forces them to play the same note loudly and shrilly for the whole movie. Aside from Gulager, only Rollins proves tolerable as he plays enough of a regular dude instead of a type, so he can react organically and spontaneously to the proceedings.

And I could deal with bad characters in a horror movie were it any good as horror, but while there are some decent gross out effects and moments of splatstick choreography, they’re totally undermined by the quick cut shakycam and dingy colour scheme that make this a totally unpleasant visual experience.
