(On mbile, so I can’t squash it down)
Era is laying on her back on the roof, knees up and arms thrown out to either side. Her raven hair is pulled into a braid that has been tossed over one of the girl’s shoulders, and... Era seems fascinated.
“What’s got your attention this time, kid?”
Feather keeps her voice somewhat quiet as she walks over, as people are sleeping, and Feather lifts an arm to just point... up. So Feather lays down beside her to look as well.
“Sky’s pretty tonight, yeah...”
“The sky’s pretty every night. All the time, really, but... at night it looks like magic. Like...”
The teen trails off, trying to find the analogy, and when she does, she pushes herself upright to look at Feather, a grin spreading across her face.
“Like the flowers we saw last winter... you remember?”
Feather chuckles, raising her brows lightly.
“There were a lot of flowers last winter...”
Era groans, pushing at Feather’s arm lightly.
“You know which ones I meant... right? Uh... glowing ones. From when it got dark? ...Watching the stars... feels like that. All... pretty and warm and nice. You know?”
Feather turns her attention upwards, her smile slowly fading again as she thinks about that.
There’s a thump as Era drops back against the surface, and Feather finds herself making a face. That has to have hurt... but Era is answering like nothing happened. This kid...
“It’s just so... *much*. There’s dozens and hundreds of other worlds out there, right? I mean, I can’t look at all the other universes, but... I can pretend. I can look up and make believe that some star out there has a world like this one, and there’s another girl sat on her room staring up and trying to imagine me right back... and it’s so pretty! All the stars when the clouds clear, and the swirls you see when someone tugs at the magic in the air in just the right way, and...”
Era trails off again, just smiling contentedly, and Feather nods.
It feels like she should have said more, but... she doesn’t exactly know what she should say, if anything. So they lay there in silence, watching the sky.
...Feather is pretty sure that Era fell asleep at some point, if she’s honest with herself, but the mutt doesn’t even make it until dawn before she’s fallen into a slumber of her own.
