6: A game that’s changed you the most?

Ohhhh man games change me a lot, and make me cry a lot XD I must say the game that’s changed me the most is TWEWY. I started off HATING Neku (aka the main character) and I almost dropped the game because of him, but after I forced myself to keep playing… he grew on me, he developed, he learned from his mistakes, AND HE IS NOW MY FAVORITE CHARACTER. It taught me so many things, about trust and friendship and having resolve. It really opened up my eyes about how we see the world and how we can live in it. Ughhh it changed me a lot ok

10: A game you’ve completely given up on?

Ohhh hmm I know I’ve dropped games before, but I need to remember it them… I have a really bad memory sometimes XD This question is better suited for anime ahahah dropped so many over the past year HMMMM I DUNNO??? I MEAN I SPEND MY MONEY ON GAMES I ACTUALLY DO WANT. Oh well I did give up on playing Ocarina of Time, I sucked at that game so badly, but I know about the story and it is a great game but just never clicked for me

aaaAAAAA I can't even really begin to explain all the reasons I love Ooishi at once but I wiLL TRY

overall I guess it was just??? really refreshing to see Ryukishi try his hand at the "old grizzled cop whose intuition is always right" stereotype and completely play up to or subvert some of those expectations. Ooishi overall comes onto the scene as someone who seems suspicious, but who the reader takes information from for granted because we assume it's coming from a reliable, unbiased source--only to find that Ooishi's not so unbiased after all. he's hot-headed, he's extremely loyal to the people he cares about (getting him to care about u is admittedly difficult though), and he's extremely driven to fit things together even if they don't necessarily fit. this makes for a p bad combination when u throw in a family like the Sonozakis who take credit for all things whether they had anything to do with them or not, and when he's got a score to settle.

I wasn't expecting to relate to him on such a personal level either, but his feelings towards his father especially, I can relate to. in a lot of ways, most of Ooishi's motivation still comes from feeling like a child even though he's been fully grown for ages. he mourned his father after his death, despite his father's abuse and the way his father ignored him as a child. and his longer, slower period of mourning made it easier for him to open up to the dam site construction manager when he came around to step into those paternal shoes and tell Ooishi what to do. combine that with the fact that Ryukishi even flat-out mentions that Ooishi tends to look and act more like a yakuza than the real yakuza in the story, and it's obvious how anyone hurting someone within the select, close group of people he likes would devastate him, especially with a murder as gruesome as lynching and dismemberment. his childish need to find someone to blame, his desperation to find someone to support him and help him feel as if he's grown and developed--all of that was very, very human, much more so than I was expecting out of the adult cast in a story geared more towards the children (versus, say, Umineko, where the focus is very equally distributed across children, adults, and fantasy characters).

useless but rly cute Ooishi trivia includes:

he likes the color purple (especially when buying Chinese bellflowers)

the reason he's so eager to retire is mostly so he can fulfill his mother's wish of going back to Hokkaido; he feels he would let her down if he didn't because she's been asking him to take her back for so long

he wants to take baLLROOM DANCING LESSONS and eventually teach them to other people if that's not the cutest thing idk what is

despite having worked on the police force for like thirty years he's never even pointed a gun at someone by the time he meets Akasaka, much less shot anyone. the only time he points a gun at someone after that is at the Yamainu, to save Akasaka's life

he's talented at several illicit mahjong moves, all of which are very difficult, but the one the kids were so eager to learn in Minagoroshi-hen isn't even very useful in a real game, according to Ooishi

he's a close combat expert, presumably to make up for his lack of knowledge about firearms. the only person who could ever best him in a fight was the dam construction manager

he's really bad at taking orders from superiors he doesn't have respect for. to the point of directly calling one of his superiors "-kun" after the guy specifically told him not to address him with "-kun" (I feel u Ooishi)

both Ooishi and general narration mention his similarities with Keiichi when he was younger several times; even though DEEN's anime shows a younger!Ooishi as somewhat stocky, Ooishi himself mentions being a "scrawny" boy. why there's no fanart of this miracle of the world, I'm not quite sure

Ooishi canonically enjoys Akasaka's company more than almost anyone else's; Matsuribayashi-hen mentions that it's "unusual for Ooishi to enjoy anyone's company this much"

he looks more like a yakuza than a real yakuza I'm sorry that's still the best description of him
