The void is nothing but at in works at the Venice Biennale this year, where abstraction has form, function, and coded messages, ranging from the mediumistic paintings of Hilma af Klint to anonymous Tantric works from India representing Shiva Linga. Details of Sarah Sze's work for the United States Pavilion and Bashir Makhoul's installation representing Palestine--crowd-sourced boxes that create a shantytown in a Venice garden--round out the selection.
