Day 265: The Eight of Pentacles
This card jumped right out and surprised me. It’s about plugging away at your craft, practicing and refining day-to-day. And finally getting somewhere.
In doing readings, I most often see the Eight of Pentacles come up reversed, a gentle rebuke for being lazy about our skills. It tell us we haven’t done our homework or practice with due diligence. When it’s right-side-up, it says that our talents are being realized, that we now can stride toward our dreams with confidence. But, we’re not there yet and must continue to work hard. It also comes with a caution to forget about plying our trade for profit; the joy of self-expression must always be our motivation. It asserts that if we continue to put in the time and effort daily, we will be achieve a type of excellence that is its own reward.
Writing this blog is daily practice for me. I’m still learning how to manipulate words with a precision that allows me to say exactly what’s on my mind. I always feel as though I’m not working hard enough to learn the craft of screenwriting, which is, obviously, a very different animal from essay writing. It’s also unlike any other form of storytelling. The Tarot has been very encouraging since I’ve started blogging about my daily cards. That makes me think I need to continue to pound it out--here, on Twitter, in my outline for the next script, and in the script I’ve been agonizing over for months. Just keep pounding keys.
“The wise screenwriter is he who wears his second-best suit, artistically speaking, and doesn’t take things too much to heart. He should have a touch of cynicism, but only a touch. The complete cynic is as useless to Hollywood as he is to himself.” – -- Raymond Chandler
