When the Bugle Blows
The Spectacular Spider-Man #147
This is brilliant! Exhilarating.
Inferno rages. An injured Spidey stumbles into the offices of the Daily Bugle and falls at J. Jonah’s feet. Outside his home, Robbie fights off attackers and starts to find his courage again. The Hobgoblin makes a (stupid) deal with N’Astirh.
Several comics have shown ordinary people suffering at the hands of the demons in the city. This is the first to show the other side: non-powered characters fighting back. Very cool to see Mary Jane and Robbie kicking ass, in separate locations.
It’s always cool when Spider-Man and J.Jonah are on the same side, but seldom is it as awesome as seeing them side-by-side fighting demons. And the whole newsroom in the thick of it, also. This is really something special.
The new Hobgoblin has consistently shown himself to be an idiot. His greatest/worse moment so far comes in this comic. Having him make a deal with N’Astirh is inspired writing, and the final pages are truly jaw-dropping.
Wow.
