📢 USPTO Layoffs Amid Government Shutdown

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has confirmed layoffs affecting about 1% of its 14,000+ workforce as the government shutdown continues.

🔹 Acting Patent Commissioner Valencia Wallace stated the cuts will focus on "mission-critical operations," with six positions in the patent unit eliminated and some roles in communications also impacted. 🔹 USPTO Director John Squires clarified that these layoffs are not performance-related. 🔹 The agency will keep operating using reserve funds from patent and trademark fees collected last year. 🔹 The Denver regional office will be permanently closed, shifting most of its staff to remote work.
