"Hijab should be banned" - Swiss politician, Walter Wobmann
A Swiss politician, Walter Wobmann, has argued that women should not be allowed to wear the hijab in passport photographs. Wobmann is a member of the right-wing populist Swiss People’s Party, has stated that it is unfair to be allowed headscarves, while, hair bands and caps are not allowed in the pictures.
Wobmann has previously campaigned against minarets and burkas in Switzerland. And, now he has claimed that the policy is an act of unequal treatment.
Wobmann stated; “It is unacceptable that you can wear a hijab in a photo but not a cap. This is not a question of religious freedom but of equal treatment.”
To those who are unaware, the official guidelines for passport and identity card photos in Switzerland, briefed by the Swiss federal police (FedPol), allows the headscarves to be worn during license and passport photographs; to conserve and respect the faith.
Mr. Wobmann has claimed that he is waiting for the Federal council to respond to him, before he takes any action.
