The Hotsy Totsy Club at 1721 Broadway, between 54 & 55th Streets, on July 31, 1929. This was a notorious lowlife hangout where two men had been shot and killed on July 13. The gangster Jack "Legs" Diamond, who owned the place and was behind the bar when it happened, managed to disappear before the cops arrived. Five witnesses were taken into custody and the DA was confident he'd gotten Legs at last. But one by one the witnesses disappeared.
In April 1930, Legs waltzed into the police station and said, "I understand you gentlemen are looking for me." But by then their case had collapsed.
