Sekiro: shadows die twice, a game that I would order an authentic katana and perform ritual disembowelment to play right now
Sekiro: Shadows Die twice
Publisher: From Software/Activison
Will be Released: March 22, 2019
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the next big triple A title in line, set to be released by FromSoftware, on the above-mentioned release date. I have been extremely fucking excited for this game for many different reasons. I think most importantly to me, I really fucking love Japanese folk lore as well as the many different romanticized forms of artwork that center around this time period (Books, Manga, Artworks, retro video games). Another reason is that there aren’t too many great JRPGs that are centered on feudal japan, with many of them never being translated and brought over sees to the west, or some being so damn old they’re nearly unplayable.
[It is important to note that a game called Nioh was released a few years back which was based during this (Sengoku) time period and took its inspiration from Dank souls’ (A From software franchise) game play structure, focusing on a brutal difficulty curb, co-op, and good environmental design. I believe its high critical acclaim and amount of sales really proved that a modern video-game based on feudal japan can indeed provide a viable business investment if marketed in the west.]
Anyways, FromSoftware is also an amazing developer, so any thing is pretty much certified to be a masterpiece that their team bestows upon us. From what I’ve learned (doing my own half assed research) in the actual game, you play as an undead shinobi/ ninja whose hell bent on rescuing his adorable miracle-blood-lord-child... from a clan of warriors(The Ashina I believe...) and possibly cultists who have basically conquered a majority of the northern regions of japan (something like a fictionalized Oda Nobunaga). While on your path towards this young lord and glory you pretty much fight through hordes of demonic creatures and warriors who are loosely based on the mythical aspects of Japanese folk lore.
I was a bit worried when I heard that Activison was going to be within a 1000 mile radius of this game‘s development team but from what I’ve read they’re just mainly helping with the promotion and bug testing(PRAISE THE DEMON BUDDAH!). If it were up to them though, we’d be paying for goddamned samurai style hair-bun-loot boxes, but we can only hope not as the game has not yet been released. Hopefully this game gets the attention and respect it deserves when it finally does release, and I’m sure it will bring in many more newcomers to the FromSoftware’s game franchises as well.
