Basically this falls under the category of pop culture paganism, in which people draw spiritual inspiration from pop culture sources. How it works is complicated; every practitioner has their own idea of how it’s possible to work with pop culture entities. Here’s a post about PCP and God Theory from a number of different practitioners. Personally as a writer I believe in the power of the human mind to bring things to life, so for me that’s how I was able to connect with such entities. Others have different paradigms.
