it is. it IS. and I am so sick of it. Because the topic of gnc men ONLY ever seems to come up in fandom spaces to shut down transfems, and nothing else.

Because fact is, everyone who says "why can't he just be a feminine man" doesn't care about us either. Our existence is just a cudgel to shut up transfems with.

Like, did they care to meaningfully explore the character's gender identity beforehand? Did they think about what the character's relationship to masculinity is? Is it a goal, a desire? Is it an obligation, a burden? Something they seem to cherish in any way, or something to abhor? Of course not.

Fact is, there is a lot of overlap in transfem and transmasc narratives. We're all punished by misogyny, so transmascs fall victim to toxic masculinity. They swing too hard and deny themselves everything feminine in order to be a "real man". The same way a closeted transfem might go all in on toxic masculinity in order to hide and stamp down who she wants to be, in the belief that she could never be/doesn't deserve to be true to herself, and has to compensate for her "failings".

They're very related narratives! They are! But why oh why is the former never explored on its own? If you care so much about it, why not tell those stories? Why not talk about the conflict of wanting to keep femininity when you also want to be a man?

That's the clue, though: desire. Transmasculinity requires one to want to be. And in the cases of these characters and narratives (you know the current subject of debate is a certain goat), the answer is not yes!

But, psshhh, nah. Introspection is too much work. No, no, the only place for it is whenever transfems come up. Does anybody even fucking hear themselves. (And god forbid you hc a female character as a trans man! Now isn't that fucking unheard of!)

so sorry about what’s going on in fire emblem land cuz i saw that and could not believe my eyes. game devs being too lazy to learn how to draw more than one face is bad enough but how on earth does one screw up the color of human skin that bad. how does a mistake that egregious get this far

Engage sure had fine looking black characters! Hell, Zelkov (on the right) is plenty grey himself. And he still looks better than Theodora. And since we have the plenty vibrant Timerra (& Fogado) in the same game, it doesn't fall upon Zelkov to be the sole black person here.

(Though, let's be real, FE could learn to also give them textured hair. It's still better than the shitshow that is Awakening, but there's also still room for growth)

Over in furryland, at the exact same time as fortune's weed's developments, things also seem to be going fine!

It stings especially because Fire Emblem was improving with its black rep. 3H was a step forward. Engage was a step forward. Shadows was a step forward. It's not been perfect, but it's been getting better game by game.

Anyone remember when Eggman’s Heroes profile described him as a feminist and everyone believed it was a mistranslation of the original Japanese profile calling him a womanizer?

Than it turned not only did feminist mean the same thing in Japanese, but an internal document from Sega of Japan described Eggman as a feminist?

Frankly why fans thought Eggman being described as someone that womanized made more sense than him being described as not sexist is a mystery to me?

it really is so annoying that for everything people will put The Precious Nihongo on a pedestal and assume anything in english is Wrong By Default. and the real kicker is ofc that these people don't speak japanese either, so they'll put MTL over localized work

i guess here you could say "but classic era stuff like comics and cartoons portray eggman as sexist" and the games just kinda. never have. the games just dont have eggman express interest in people in general because he's too busy trying to get that hedgehog

goddd that reminds me of some FE Engage discourse where people were like "The game lets you romance your sister!" and then I looked at that and it literally does not. Because that whole conversation is "Let's never be apart again and stay together forever!" which is Perfectly Reasonsble for two siblings who had a big dramatic reunion after being apart for 1k+ years

and then you have "The game lets you romance a minor!" but then someone with more jp knowledge than google translate looked at that in the og jp and the word people were horrified over also meant "business partner", for a character whose entire gimmick was Being A Merchant. so no, she's not asking to get hitched, she is asking to run a business.

there's a constant assumption also that the japanese text (or japan in general, honestly!) has to be more Regressive And Backwards. that anytime you have like, any sort of progressive subtext, be it pro-queer or anti-racist or feminist or anti-ableist or anything, that this is localizers adding Their Woke Agenda instead of anything that could possibly exist in text.

Which is so weird to me when historically the opposite has been true. Like dubs of Sailor Moon making the lesbians cousins. Or nonbinary characters being erased, like older tls of Soul Eater using he/him for Chrona.

The eggman feminist thing honestly is pretty funny but I can see the logic of it, being that Eggman is just so egotistical and sees himself as so far above everyone for his own merits that he wouldn't think to discriminate on any other basis.

There are shit localizations! There are! I mentioned some here! But there is also just frankly a fuckton of racism in anime & video game spaces over localization! And people refuse to also respect the point of localization, which is to create a smooth experience by translating not just words, but culture. The World Ends With You is a FANTASTIC example of this. It's so ladden with slang and teen culture that handing you a dictionary for japanese internet slang would probably drag down the experience of connecting to these characters as reflective of you, the teenage player.

I played Neo Twewy in german and it was so fantastic. Words alone cannot describe the delight at seeing video game characters call each other "opfer" it was perfect

genuienly why the fuck didn't i think about taking ibuprofen for throat pain. why did it take asking the doctor for me to realize. "yeah those lozenges never work for me. it's fine to just take 2 ibus a day for a couple of days" - the doctor in her infinite blinding shimmering wisdom. i have throat pain so obviously i can only take shit for throat pain, and not shit for general pain. am i a fucking MORON?!?!?
