Felice Beato, Samurai, Yokohama, albumen silver print from glass negative, captured in Japan c. 1864-65. Just a few years after Beato made this photograph, the feudal period in Japan ended with the Meiji Restoration. After more than eight centuries of military leadership, the sumurai class was officially abolished.

"Hakone" Image by Felice Beato, printed by Baron Stillfried

This is a statue of Enmeijizo at Lake Ashi, Hakone.

It is part of a group of Stillfried's photos mounted on album pages and labeled in French. This image was originally taken by Felice Beato, 1866/67.

This statue was destroyed during the Haibutsu kishaku during the Meiji Restoration.
