Next month, King Felipe VI will celebrate his 50th birthday, and to celebrate the occasion, the Spanish Mint is going to release a new 30 Euro commemorative coin in his honour. One side of the coin will be the King’s profile and the other will be his shield. A special fact about the coin is that King Felipe’s shield will be in colour. 1 million copies of the coin will be able to be purchased from the 30th of January (King Felipe’s birthday). The mint will also be releasing 400,000 2 Euro coins into circulation for his birthday as well, these coins will be similiar to the current 2 Euro coins but on the reverse side (not the side with the European map and stars), King Felipe’s shield will be placed near his profile.
“The Prince of Astuias has the maturity, preparation, and sense of responsibility necessary to assume the title of head of state and open a new era of hope which combines the experience and momentum of a new generation.” - King Juan Carlos speaking about his son following his abdication of the throne in favour of Felipe.
