And so, Felix enrolls his son as an assistant to Antonius, the legion commander. Felix knew that connection would turn out to be useful.
Marcus can't wait to start learning about warfare. This sounds far more exciting than listening to the teacher at school.

Marcus is getting older too. He's now a teenager.
"I heard from your teacher, Marcus." Felix pauses and sighs. "He doesn't think you should continue in your studies. You are at the bottom of your class, academically."
How did it come to this, anyway. Flavia's family was so well-educated, Felix had assumed Marcus would take after her. But he didn't.
"But it's so dull! I can't concentrate at all," counters Marcus.
"If you paid attention, you wouldn't find it difficult. However, I have noticed you have always enjoyed martial pursuits," adds Felix quickly. "It may be that you are fated for a different line of work than me or your uncles."
Marcus's expression softens. "What you you mean?"
It was Lupercalia, the season of love!
But then a few months later, Felix and Flavia gather their children in the tablinium for some exciting news.
"We're going to have another baby!" exclaims Flavia.
"What? But... you're so..." Cecelia trails off, not wanting to upset her mother who is so obviously excited.
Marcus has no such tact. "How can you have a baby now?"
But it doesn't matter how incredulous they are, Cecelia thinks. There's going to be a new baby in the house soon. She should have seen the signs... her mother getting tired quickly and growing rounder in the middle.
It's not really that weird, she just didn't expect it to happen to her family.
That evening, Felix's banquet goes off splendidly. Antonius is impressed with Felix's house and Flavia's hospitality. But two people at the table seem quieter than the others.
Later that evening, Sage finds Caul in the library.
Sage's fist clenches before she speaks. "Don't you dare let it slip about our past together. We both know it's over now, but just a stray word from you could ruin me even now!"
"What do you mean? Aren't you married now?" asks Caul.
"No thanks to you! Antonius thinks I'm a widow, and that my son isn't illegitimate. If he knew he was raising your son, and that I was never married--I don't know what would happen."
Caul swallows. "My son? I have another son?"
History Challenge, Generation 2: Early Civilization
So, here we are in the Early Civilization era. I decided to go with Roman, since I’m fairly familiar with Roman history from some college courses I took. And because this is set in Britain, cultures like Greek and Egyptian just wouldn’t work. So this will be in Roman Britain, with a mixture of the local Celtic culture with a ruling Roman culture.
Obviously, things are a little tricky since we’ve had a huge jump in time. I’ve been thinking of how to do this, and decided to just “retcon” everything at the beginning of each new era to rewrite the previous era’s story in a way that makes sense in this time period.
Introducing the heir and his spouse:
Felix now has a position working for the Romans after marrying the daughter of a Roman official. He has good connections and money now, and has brought his aged parents and teenaged brother to live in his spacious house.
Flavia, formerly “Hazel,” is Felix’s wife. She is a music lover who enjoys the finer things of life. She dreams of a close-knit family and talented children who make her proud.
As Caul and Hana are Celts, they seem a bit uncouth to Felix’s Roman friends, but his younger brother Titus has already adapted to the ways of the Romans. Felix’s older brother Rufus, however, chose to remain with his Celtic bride. Felix is a bit embarrassed about that, but would never turn away his brother when he visits occasionally.
I’ve updated my family tree (through the plumtree app) and created a new “landing page” for my challenge that will allow new and old readers to find posts about certain characters or for certain eras.
I’ll start out the era with a house tour in my next installment.
The day of Titus and Dorcas's wedding arrives. Felix greets each of his guests personally.
Rufus and Willow arrive, dressed in the local garb.
"Is he wearing trousers?" whispers Aurelia.
Cassia's reply isn't as soft. "I think so. How barbaric!"
"Does he not have proper clothing for his brother's wedding?" Cassia wonders aloud.
