Hana and Caul
I didn't do one of these for Caul, so I'll just do one for both Caul and Hana. Farewell to my founders, who, while not perfect, were always amusing.

Hana and Caul
I didn't do one of these for Caul, so I'll just do one for both Caul and Hana. Farewell to my founders, who, while not perfect, were always amusing.
That evening, Felix's banquet goes off splendidly. Antonius is impressed with Felix's house and Flavia's hospitality. But two people at the table seem quieter than the others.
Later that evening, Sage finds Caul in the library.
Sage's fist clenches before she speaks. "Don't you dare let it slip about our past together. We both know it's over now, but just a stray word from you could ruin me even now!"
"What do you mean? Aren't you married now?" asks Caul.
"No thanks to you! Antonius thinks I'm a widow, and that my son isn't illegitimate. If he knew he was raising your son, and that I was never married--I don't know what would happen."
Caul swallows. "My son? I have another son?"
Soon after his youngest son's wedding, Caul dies.
Flavia comforts little Cecelia. She wasn't so close to her father-in-law, so her grief feels small compared to everyone else's.
I didn't forgive him, thinks Hana through her tears.
"We have to go down to the shore to wash our clothes," Flavia tells her small daughter, Cecelia.
Hana smiles and shakes her head. "You don't have to explain everything to her. Children just absorb things around them. That's how I raised all three of my boys."
"Yes, but I'm raising her in the Roman style," Flavia replies. She loves her mother-in-law, but sometimes they have different opinions. How could Cecelia become a fine lady if she isn't brought up delicately?
She turns to Cecelia again. "Grandfather is fishing at the shore. Let's go and see him."
Cecelia beams, and her smile only grows bigger as they draw closer to the shore.
"Is that my girl?" Caul drops his fishing pole. He keeps his granddaughter entertained while the two women work.
(I'm trying a slightly different format here--let me know if it's easier/harder for you to understand. 🙂)
Hana confronts Caul as soon as Sage leaves. "You have another child, Caul?"
"Hey, I didn't even know about the child until tonight either," protested Caul.
"I don't care about the child. What were you doing with her? Am I not good enough for you?"
Caul reaches for Hana. "Of course you're good enough for me. We've still got it, baby!"
Hana shoves him away. "Stop it! Get your hands off me! I don't know if I want to look at you anymore. Or if I can forgive you."
The whole family heads to the bathhouse one day to relax and socialize. Well, except for Felix, who is here for an important meeting.
Hana thought bringing a table for Caul to sell his fish would keep him occupied. But he's very loud, calling out "Fish! Get your fresh fish!" and disturbing the sophisticated patrons of this bathhouse.
"Dad, can you be any more embarrassing?!" Titus exclaims.
Flavia enjoys playing her lyre and the attention it brings. The people who visit the bathhouse know how to appreciate her playing.
Everyone ends up in the water eventually, though.
As Hana walks out of the dining room, she overhears raised voices in the library.
Caul has another child... with that woman?
The day came when Rufus felt he was old enough to leave the island.
RUFUS: I want to go and be with Willow. Since she can't come here, I will go with her and join her tribe.
