Magda and Xanth, Varis and Felix
you're absolutely right, Felix has this all-encompassing gay energy, like "Comrades in arms? Yeah, I do wanna hold them in my arms."
felix literally runs away and joins a bunch of misfits who live outside of normal society because he feels like he can't live up to his father's expectations and feels trapped in normal society. this kid's gay! when he meets up with rook again in vox rook's like "have you learnt anything? done anything productive?" and he goes "yeah. men"
rook's hero worship of felix is hilarious considering felix is the most cringefail adhd edgelord in all of undertown's sewers
from that day on rook never allowed felix to stay out drinking past 2
I'm 99.99999% certain that after the Battle of the Foundry Glades and the preceding event, Rufus had a hell of a lot of survivor's guilt and didn't know what to do, but then he was with his father a few months afterwards and Xanth knew exactly what was going on because he'd been through the same thing. He asks Rufus what's going on, and at first Rufus can't answer, but eventually he breaks down and starts sobbing into his father's chest because, really, he's just a kid, and even though he's now a corporal, after all he's been through, he doesn't know what to do. And Xanth holds him and strokes his hair and tells him that he performed admirably and none of what happened was his fault. Xanth tells him that it is terrible to lose friends to war, horrendous, but that just because he's alive and his friends are not, doesn't mean that he doesn't deserve to live. And Rufus can only hold on to his father and cry, but then Xanth takes him to see Rook and Felix and they tell him the same things basically, but it helps, every bit, because Rook is his father's friend and Rufus' hero and Felix is just a great guy and understands. They all talk about how they know exactly what he's going through, how they lost friends and family: Varis, Henkel, Twig, and many of Rook's banderbear friends. And gradually, Rufus begins to open up and understand and they take him back to his surviving friends and they commiserate over woodgrog and tilder stew and by the end of the day, Rufus doesn't necessarily feel whole again, but he's getting better.
