“I bought this on its release having heard the lead single Lovely Head. I loved it instantly. A little like Portishead’s debut in 1994, when this came out in 2000, it sounded like nothing else around. It sounded the voices in the head, the music and mood in mind and an untapped yearning for something lost. Or not yet found. . It remains my favourite record of theirs, although they’ve produced much outstanding and wonderfully different work since then, and is somewhere in my top ten albums of the noughties also. . On Lovely Head Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory manage to combine ethereal atmospheric electronica alongside a raw earthiness. This is in part due to Goldfrapp’s amazing voice, but also the musical heritage upon which they borrow and pay homage too. Morricone and cinematic-style orchestral scores in general, as well as cabaret, klezmer, Alpine oompah and mariachi bands...” .
