CARSON, Calif. — Sigi Schmid pronounced the LA Galaxy “pretty injury-free” on Thursday, which is a bit of a stretch, even as the team grows healthier, or seemingly so, with each passing week.

LA is beyond the hamstring crisis that forced four starters to the sideline in March, but neither Jonathan dos Santos nor Rolf Feltscher figure to be available Saturday night when the New York Red Bulls visit StubHub Center (10:30 pm ET | TV & streaming info).

Jonathan dos Santos was pulled from the starting lineup before last weekend’s 2-0 loss to Atlanta United when he strained his right calf during pregame warmups. He wasn’t upstairs as the Galaxy began preparations for the Red Bulls in earnest on Thursday, and Schmid said it “maybe looks not likely for him on the weekend.”

A few minutes later, LA’s head coach went further. “Jonathan,” he said, “will be out for Saturday’s game. … We’re hoping he’ll be back for the Houston game” on May 5.

Jonathan dos Santos, who has played the No. 8 to Perry Kitchen’s No. 6 in the Galaxy midfield, missed two games last month with a hamstring injury and went down this time just as his brother returned from a five-game absence with a hamstring ailment.

Giovani dos Santos came off the bench with about 25 minutes to go in the Atlanta game, playing in the middle of a 4-4-2 alignment until LA, down a goal and seeking an equalizer, switched to a 3-5-2 with about 10 minutes remaining.

Schmid after the match was critical of Giovani dos Santos for playing “60 yards from goal” when he needs to be stationed, as a starting point, “30 yards from goal, 40 yards from goal.”

Schmid expanded on those thoughts following the Galaxy’s in-stadium training session Thursday.

“It’s Gio dropping deep, but I know why he’s dropping deep. He’d dropping deep to find the ball,” Schmid said. “So if he finds the ball up front, he won’t drop deep. So it’s a matter of whatever you want to call it: feed the bear, don’t starve him, let him get the ball in good positions and he won’t go.

“All good players want to find the ball. If you look at [Zlatan Ibrahimovic] early in that game. Ibra dropped into midfield looking for the ball. We just need to do a better job of finding those guys in advanced positions.”

Feltscher, one of four players to start all seven games (with Kitchen, center back Jorgen Skjelvik and goalkeeper David Bingham), suffered a shoulder injury in a fall during Tuesday’s training session, and Schmid confirmed that it was unlikely his first-choice right back will be available. LA isn’t yet certain about the severity of Feltscher’s injury nor the timeline of his return to the field.

Speedy winger Emmanuel Boateng, who was initially on LA’s 18-man roster for the Atlanta game but pulled beforehand with an MCL strain, should be available against the Red Bulls, Schmid said.

Feltscher y LA Galaxy se preparan para recibir al equipo de expansión y su rival local Los Angeles FC este sábado (3 p.m. ET; FOX Deportes, FOX) en lo que será el choque más anticipado de la semana, pues no solo es el primer clásico entre los dos equipos angelinos, sino que el Galaxy contará con su última contratación: Zlatan Ibrahimović.

¿Qué significa para ti jugar en el equipo más ganador en la historia de la MLS? ¿Sientes presión porque el año pasado fue la peor temporada de este equipo y le urge volver a la cima?

“Cuando tú entras al campo con tu equipo, siempre tienes ganas de ganar. Realmente no importa dónde estés, siempre tienes estas ganas de lograr los puntos y estar alto en la [clasificación] porque es así. A mí me gusta ganar y estar alto, y todos mis compañeros sienten eso. Estando en club grande como LA Galaxy es normal que tú sientas orgullo de estar ahí y que sabes que tienes que darlo todo para el club, sobre todo. Tenemos un equipo bueno, me gustar de verdad desde el primer día, todos son buenos tipos y estamos bien”.    

Llegas a una liga cuyo formato tiene playoffs y una final disputada en un partido, es algo distinto a lo que estás acostumbrado. ¿Te gusta este sistema donde un partido puede decidirlo todo?

“El objetivo es llegar arriba donde tiene que estar el club. Dar el máximo para mejorar cada día”.

¿Qué otros deportes o disciplinas practicas y cómo te ayudan para ser mejor futbolista?

“A mí me gusta las artes marciales y desde mucho me gusta el boxeo. Tengo una obsesión con el boxeo. Yo siempre digo que después del fútbol, voy a ser boxeador si todavía estoy físicamente (Risas)”.

¿Boxeo con artes marciales, todo junto como MMA?

“Me gusta mucho el MMA y tengo mucho respeto para las personas que lo hacen porque es un deporte fuerte. Ya de niño que me gustan las peleas, pero todo eso en paz. Soy una persona en paz, pero me gustan todo ese tipo de deportes”.

¿Cuando nos estás en prácticas de fútbol, haces boxeo?

“Llevo tiempo sin hacerlo porque te cansa mucho. Estoy más enfocado en lo que es importante. Los veo todos los días en mi casa”.

¿Cuál es el boxeador que más admiras?

“El fighter que más admiro es Conor McGregor. Él es el número uno para mí. Después como boxeador, se sabe que Floyd Mayweather es impresionante. Mike Tyson me gusta más por como soy yo, me gusta más su estilo”. 

¿Te sientes más venezolano que suizo?

“Yo siempre me he sentido más venezolano que suizo por como yo soy. Me gusta hacer bromas y me gusta reír. Los suizos son muy buenas personas, pero son más fríos, lineales. Yo soy un tipo más alegre y soy así, me gusta disfrutar la vida”.    

¿Lo venezolano es por parte de tu mamá?

“Sí, mi carácter yo pienso que lo agarré más de mi mamá”.

Eres parte de una invasión de venezolanos y sudamericanos que han reforzado la MLS en 2018, ¿qué le aporta estos jugadores a la liga?

“Como ya dije, la liga está mejorando. Eso lo dicen muchos, yo apenas llegué. Muchas en Europa te dicen ‘ay, la liga’ y así, pero es porque no saben. La liga de verdad está creciendo más. Estoy orgulloso de que estén tantos venezolanos aquí. Es bello jugar en contra de ellos y verlos”.

¿Tu estilo en la cancha?

“Me gusta mucho cuando hay la posibilidad de atacar. Al mismo tiempo tengo que hacer mi trabajo como defensor y dar siempre lo que yo tengo, eso es lo mío”. 

Vas a jugar contra LAFC, la nueva rivalidad de la MLS que está naciendo y tú eres parte de este nacimiento, ¿te llama la atención enfrentar a los nuevos vecinos?   

“Pues claro la rivalidad la quieres ganar, como todos los partidos. Eso es lo importante que todos tenemos esa mentalidad. Nosotros estamos más enfocados en el día a día, así que tenemos muchas ganar de ese partido”.    

¿Cómo se da tu traspaso a la MLS?

“Digamos que muy clave fue el director deportivo, Jovan [Kirovski] y el LA Galaxy era muy clave para mí. Todos los días me llamaba. Yo no estaba muy seguro de si me quedaban algunos años más en Europa o si me venía ya. Sabiendo el importante que era, me hizo firmar acá y sobre todo él que todos los días me llamaba y me dio un buen sentimiento”.   

¿Estabas entre la MLS y dónde más?

“Inglaterra”.

¿Qué hace que Romain Alessandrini sea un jugador que marque tanta diferencia?

“Él agarra mucha responsabilidad. Yo ahorita que estoy jugando con él y al lado de él también, noto que agarra mucha responsabilidad. Eso es importante y es un jugador clave para nosotros también. Nos ayuda mucho en el partido, tiene mucha calidad”.

¿Técnicamente qué hace bien él y le causa problemas al rival?

“Muchas veces los jugadores en su posición son más tranquilos, pero yo lo veo en los entrenamientos que da el ciento por ciento. Siempre quiere ganar”.

¿Cómo es tu relación con Josef Martínez? 

“En la selección estamos siempre juntos y hablando mucho. Encima él jugó en la liga italiana también, así que cuando nos vemos estamos hablando italiano. No sé por qué. Él es una persona muy alegre y como futbolista es muy bueno. Se sabe lo que hizo hace un año en esta liga. En la selección también es un jugador clave para nosotros”.

¿Se conocieron en Italia?

“Él llegó a Italia después, antes que yo”. 

¿Qué hace a Martínez tan bueno?

“Lo que tiene él es una velocidad impresionante. Es rapidísimo. Siendo un jugador pequeño, es muy fuerte y no lo tumban fácilmente. Mete la pierna donde se puede meter la pierna y son pocos los atacantes así. Es admirable”.
