Dabi didn’t really picture his evening to be like this. He didn’t expect the Grand Commander to ask him to do patrols with Geten. Dabi found Geten to be irksome, seeing that the girl has almost no table manners, and don’t even get him started on her calling his flames “half-assed”. He’s never really liked her, but he respects the girl's dedication. He found her annoying one way or another, and working with her was tedious. “Can you stop kicking damn pebbles? It’s annoying,” Dabi hissed, irritated at the sound of her shoe scuffing against the ground.
“Whatever,” she said and rolled her eyes, refusing to stop her little game of how far she can kick the pebbles littering the ground.
Dabi let out an irritated groan, “I swear Geten if you don’t stop that shit I’m going to--”
Geten raised a brow, challenging him to continue his sentence. “You’re going to what?” She smirked, “Going to fight me with those measly little flames?” There she goes again, making fun of his quirk.
“--I’m going to kick you next,” he said, glaring at her, continuing to walk around the perimeter. Geten stopped kicking pebbles, not because of his threat, but because she’s getting bored of her little game. They continued to walk quietly for half an hour, checking corners and looking out for strange noises.
“I’m bored,” Geten huffed. She was sick of the deafening silence, she wanted to at least talk, but let’s be honest, Dabi doesn’t like talking to her.
“I don’t really care,” Dabi said, craning his head to look around the area. Geten rolled her eyes, huffing once more.
It was silent for another ten minutes until Geten spoke up. “What’s your favourite color?” She decided to ask him, something simple and neutral to start a conversation.
“I don’t have one,” Dabi said flatly, evident that he’s not interested in talking.
“Wow, you’re boring,” she snorted, kicking a pebble.
“If you’re going to start kicking pebbles again, I’ll lose my shit,” he scowled. Dabi was bored too, but he couldn’t really stand her so he’d rather just do his job in silence.
“Okay then, what’s your favourite food?” Geten decided to ask another question-- she really can’t stand how quiet it is.
“Can you stop talking?” Dabi glared at her.
“I can, but I don’t want to. This is too boring and it’s too quiet. I’ll lose my shit if I go another minute like this,” she said, shrugging casually.
“I literally don’t care,” Dabi said, walking faster to get away from the blonde. Geten glared at him for what felt like hours until he noticed that she’s been quiet for at least 15 minutes. “Why are you glaring at me now?” He dared to ask, raising a brow.
“I’m hoping you’ll simultaneously combust,” she huffed, crossing her arms across her chest.
“Quit acting like a child, Geten,” he said, rolling his eyes.
“You’re the one acting like a child. I just want to talk,” she snapped at him, eyes still glaring at the back of his head.
“There’s nothing to talk about, it’s not like we’re friends,” he shrugged.
“We may not be friends but we have a lot in common,” Geten said nonchalantly.
“Like what?”
“For starters, we both hate heroes, we can’t stand them. You have your own childhood traumas, as do I. And, I literally look like your mom-- oh, don’t even deny it-- I definitely look like her,” she rambled on, listing what she can recall from the top of her head. “Oh, and I know you like red bean ice cream, that’s my favourite too,” she added.
Dabi stayed silent for a long time, deep in thought at what she said. It’s true, they had those things in common, maybe that’s why he can’t stand her. Geten and him were too similar. And he hated that. He didn’t hate her, he hated the fact that they’d both been through the same shitty life.
“I guess we’re not so different,” he muttered, refusing to look at Geten.
“Hey, maybe that’s not a bad thing, right?” She smiled, patting his shoulder.
“Maybe,” he repeated, a soft smile gracing his lips.
It was silent for another five minutes or so, until Dabi remembered what she said. “Wait-- how do you know I like red bean ice cream?” He asked her with a raised bow.
“I saw you sneaking some into your room, which I found cute,” she giggled.
“I’m not cute,” he scoffed, a small blush forming on his cheeks.
“Don’t get me wrong, you’re annoying-- but let’s face it, you are cute, with your little flames and all,” Geten laughed, her head thrown back, satisfied at the now red-faced Dabi.
“Shut up,” he hissed, glaring at her.
During the rest of their patrol, Dabi and Geten talked - well, it was mostly bickering - about everything and nothing. Geten wasn’t as bad as he thought, she was chatty, he found, and she can’t stop talking when you get her started. Dabi was mostly listening, marveled at how fast and how long she could talk. At the end of their patrol, Dabi looked back at Geten before leaving. “You’re not so bad,” he said and turned to leave, a gentle smile on his lips.
Geten was smiling as well. “I can say the same about you,” she called out to his disappearing figure.
When they were assigned for their next patrol, Dabi did not protest.
Geten really wasn't sure how it happened. A few months ago, this guy was her enemy. But now...now she found herself feeling something for Dabi. Something she was almost afraid to put words to.
Gross, right? Feelings. They're a weakness, especially for someone as powerful as her. And Geten hated weakness. Yet somehow this asshole had burned his way right into her heart.
I think the reason why Horikoshi didn't made Geten a girl *I mean I rly hope so* is bc Dabi would lose interest in fighting Endeavor and he'd think more of Geten's safety.
I gruess that, if Dabi reveals his killing-Endeavor goal to her she'd want to help him achieve it, they're now in the same team after all, but he'd insist on her not participating bc she might get hurt and he doesn't want that.
At first she'd be offended bc how dare he think that she's weak? And then she'd avoid him for some time until he properly explains himself. He won't, bc they're both too prideful in their own ways. Eventually they give up bc staying without each other for a long time feels alien to them. They talk about it and it turns into a confession.
Geten says she won't let him fight Endeavor bc she doesn't want him to get hurt as well. Turns out no one of them wants the other to put their lives on the line bc of some stupid decision they might regret later.
They'd run away from everyone and try to live their own lives.
