‘I’m a feminist but…’ I continue to pluck/ wax/ shave even though I hate having to do it! . Navigating the world as a modern woman is a tough gig but Deborah Frances-White, the brilliant mind behind @theguiltyfeminist podcast, becomes the relatable voice in our heads, saying out aloud the things we often don’t. This book is hilarious and frightening all at once and even though I laughed out aloud quite a few times, I also wanted to cry. There are so many ways in which I - as a baby feminist - don’t recognise something as being a ‘thing’ because they’re so ingrained as being ’the way it is’ that I’ve never thought to question it. The Guilty Feminist does a really awesome job of criticising the patriarchy but also providing the listener - or in this case, the reader - with insight on how we can do better, both within our selves and how we interact with others. . I find the conversation around gender to be fascinating and important and the Q&A with @reubsjw in the book only reinforced that for me! I also appreciated the piece by @hannah_gadsby about the same-sex marriage vote in Australia, adding an element of home and familiarity for me! I think the chapters about body positivity, confidence and yes vs no are helpful and practical and useful and I know their messages will stick with me, long after reading the book. . I don’t believe that feminism can claim to have all the answers, nor that it is always right. What I do believe is that it provides us with a set of values which can help us move forward in making a most-needed change. I believe in treating others as I wish to be treated, and trying my best to lead by example. We can’t be perfect, but can certainly try to be better, to challenge ourselves, to listen to one another, and to make genuine connections with human beings, based on nothing else but how fabulous they are! .
