Seriously though, the spread of misinformation and disinformation is higher than ever, thanks to AI, botnets, 4chan, fascists, psyops, etc. Please use good sourcing!!! This is legit a way to help keep your communities safe.

If you see something and you don't know if it's true, or if the source is reliable, the two best/most comprehensive places to check are:

Snopes - to check if something is true/real, including social media posts and images/videos

Media Bias/Fact Check - to check if a website, news outlet, or other source is reliable. They rate outlets on accuracy of reporting and on political bias, and maintain detailed fact-checking records

I encourage you to check them whenever you're not sure about something important - the bigger and more upsetting it is, the more important it is to check! And I also encourage you to bookmark them for whenever are worried you might be reblogging something untrue or made by AI!

I. HATE. IN-TEXT. CITATIONS.

Not just when I'm writing a paper, but when I'm READING a textbook it looks SO messy (Rick-Astley, 1969, p. 420) and it's SO distracting, (Morbius, 2022) and SO disruptive (Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, & Rudolph, 1964.) to my reading and (Bird, Grouch, Monster, & Monster, 1997 ) learning process. And why are some of them SO FUCKING (According, 2007; To & All, 1991; Known, Laws, & Of, 2378; Aviation, 57 B.C.E.) LONG???

Where did all the footnotes in history books go? Why am I sitting here like where are your sources, young man? Does your mother know you published a book without a traceable bibliography? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Hey, question for tumblr users who use screen readers and other assistive technology:

What is the most accessible way to format source links in paragraphs of text?

Specifically, I usually default to (x) as my format, but is that actually useful and easily rendered?

Also actually while I'm at it, are tumblr polls easily screen reader accessible? Because I was going to make this into one but then I realized they definitely might not be...

I did do research on this myself, but wasn't able to find anything on this specifically, partly because search engines suck now and partly because my understanding is that it varies a lot depending on how the site/app is set up and coded.

Mon, Sept 8th

Café studying/writing session! 🍵

After a weekend of working I am physically really tired, but I still feel the motivation from last week's meeting with my thesis supervisor. So, I decided to treat myself to a nice peppermint tea in Starbucks (not my favourite study spot, but one of the very few coffee shops where I feel comfortable spending a few hours) and I finally started jotting some thoughts down.

The research phase has been very informative thus far, but I do believe that starting the writing process is for the best way to make productive progress. I have written down a 500-word rundown of the different sides of my argument in extremely simplified language. With time, I will be expanding each section until I have a fully cohesive document. My word limit is 10,000 words (bibliography not included thank god) and I am so excited to see this project slowly start to take shape!
