Alright, so I'm pretty shitty about a bunch of social-justice things that may or may not piss you off. If you're not interested in how I feel in this or intend on responding aggressively (I'm all for calm dialogue if that's what you think is necessary) please move along
Urgh, I am so done with the ridiculous elitism that seems to exist in social justice circles. Like, when did this become an "Oppression Olympics" especially when we're talking about issues that are loaded with interesectionality or in some cases don't apply directly to the people involved in the discourse at all.
Like, did I the "all allies are evil" memo?
And on top of that, when did there start being a level of "alternativeness" that you had to achieve before you were allowed into any sort of discourse, or any sort of minority group. Like those darn "femininity isn't anti-feminist" posts that have been going around. Can someone please tell me why they all have alternative haircuts, or tattoos or in some way quite obviously reject social ideas of femininity. I'm not trying to define femininity, I'm all about rejecting body policing and subverting social stigmas on things but if I want to be conventionally feminine, that doesn't make me any less of a feminist, or any less of a lesbian. When I came out, the response I was often greeted with was "but you're to pretty to be a lesbian" or "but you don't look like a lesbian". THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND THE QUEER COMMUNITY SEEMS TO GIVE NO FUCKS. Like, when I first asked where the queer lounge was during o-week, I was told that it was a safe space and "we ask that straight people don't go there". I can't even begin to describe how many odd looks I got when first entering the queer lounge by my self, and its shit. The automatic assumption that a girl who isn't alternative looking is straight from the queer community shits me so bad. You are reinforcing stereotypes. You are reinforcing the stereotype that women are only lesbians because they can't get men and further more, you're body policing me. I can be as conventional as a I damn well please and I still get to identify as a queer feminist, and for once i'd love the queer community to stop informing hetronormativity. I mean we have bear-pride, for men who don't fit the conventional gay stereotype, where's my femme-pride? (yeah intersectionality issues with sexism, lets not go there)
Which again, brings me to my issue with misandry. If you use it for self care that's fine, if you use it as a reaction to the oppressive culture of misogyny, power to you. But if you are all up in my face with male-hate and penis-hate every day I am allowed to walk away. I don't want misandry to be a part of my feminism and I sure don't want penis hate anywhere near me cause that's fucking erasive of the trans* community. Misandry as a part of feminism feel to me (personally, if this is not what it is to you, I understand and am not attempting to police your self expression in a patriarchal world.) as just a needless reinforcement of the "all feminists are man-hating lesbians" and by extension "lesbians just hate men" neither of which I am okay with. Feminism is for everyone, I feel I don't need to explain that. And as far as the 'lesbians just hate men' - just no, I don't. Others might, and fine, but I hate the patriarchal system that turns out dudebros on a production line. I am in love with a man and still identify as a lesbian and I am not comfortable being around copious amounts of male-hatred. I often feel as if not wanting misandry in your life means you get an automatic feminist red-card, and it shouldn't, because avoiding it is just as much a form of self-care as participating in it. I am surrounded by enough hatred from the wider world as it is, so I don't feel like participating in anymore, even if it is perfectly valid.
I'm sorry if this turned into a rather poorly constructed block of text, but this is my space to express myself, and I felt that this was something I needed to get off my chest.
