Beginning with the photo shoot, editing the photos, and finally making the prints, its been a long process, but the stickers are finally in! The process was indeed complicated as we decided to choose images from the shoot that we felt best captured the essence of the women we see in many media outlets today. In our opinion, women in the media are often hyper-sexualized and their bodies are often objectified. In conjunction with this vision, we decided to make the image of our "media woman" anonymous by putting a censor bar over her face, as we believe women in the media are often stripped of their identities. We created a grainy effect using spray paint, as we felt the texture would create an evocative, yet modern look. Drawing on inspiration from Shepard Fairey, we have sought to inspire curiosity in our audience by asking them if they think this woman is powerful. By simply asking "power?", and in French "puissance?", we hope that people will stop upon seeing the image, and think, if even for a moment, what power means to them. Is a woman presenting her body hyper-sexually in media empowering? You tell us.
