I tried out a Diva Cup (first time using any menstrual cup), and I found that it caused a LOT of pain. It was ok once inside, but inserting it was uncomfortable and removing it was extremely painful. I've used tampons for 10 years without a problem, so I was disappointed, even though I knew it was a risk. I have a very high pain tolerance, but the removal hurt enough to make me reconsider using it. Did I select the wrong cup? Do I just need practice? Is it safe to keep trying?
It could definitely be the TYPE of menstrual cup, or just that your body doesn't particularly like cups. When you say pain, it’s hard for me to know exactly what you mean.
Chafing pain during insertion might be related to dryness. You could consider trying the next insertion with some lubricant on the cup as you insert it. It might also be related to a vaginal infection. Have you been having any burning/itching/pain in your vagina/vulvar area? If so, get that checked out first.
Stretching pain could be related to the fact that even though a menstrual cup is almost the same size in diameter as a tampon, there’s no doubting the fact that it is larger. Maybe you’re just not used to using larger items inside of your vagina? That’s not bad, you might just want to try a few different sizes of cups. Some are more flexible, and some are smaller. It might also make sense to try a few different folds. Check out the Punch Down Fold.
General discomfort could be related to just not enjoying the sensations of a menstrual cup. That’s fine! Or it could be related to a vaginismus situation - if it made you nervous, your pelvic floor muscles are more likely to tighten and spasm, which would definitely increase pain. If this is the case it might make sense to just cool it with the menstrual cup for now, at least until you feel a little more comfortable.
Good luck! I hope you find the right shape & size for you!
