Syd Barrett w/ his Fender Esquire | 1965
1951 Fender Esquire
This here was the first solid body electric guitar made by Fender that didn’t rely on any acoustics or sound holes to create sound. Technically it is the first solid body electric guitar ever made, although technically Les Paul did have something called “The Log” made in the 1940’s; however none of the bigger guitar companies were interested in working with him. For all intents and purposes though this was the first commercially successful solid body electric guitar.
Originally made in 1950; this here is a 1951 that recently was sold to our shop. Had been in a single family for 3 generations as the grandfather of this family bought it brand new in 1951. The son and grandson were not very interested in music; at least to the degree that they felt the needed to have this.
If this guitar shape looks familiar it’s because this is essentially what became the telecaster. An extra pickup added and a few other more specific things, but this essentially was the birth of the electric guitar as we know it. Can’t even put into words how rare these are; especially one in playable condition.
