Summary: Elizabeth Hawke and Fenris haven't spoken much since she became the Champion. That is, until one night, he shows up on her doorstep with a stab wound. A/N: I'll be honest, I didn't like this how this one turn out that much but I need this fic to leave my WIPs. like, even if i dont love it, i need it to be AWAY from my sight whenever i open my documents so i'm posting it. i got stuck on this fic for months and now im finishing it while im sick as hell, i need it to GO. It was a quiet night. 

Elizabeth was awake, writing in her journal about the events of the past day - a meeting with the Knight-Commander, helping Anders with some mage troubles, drinking with Varric, wondering where Isabela was, the usual . Barkspawn lay at her feet, and she could hear his soft snoring. Everyone else had gone to sleep, and for once, things were peaceful. 

A year had gone by since she had become Champion, turning her life upside down. Where once she was just another Ferelden refugee who made something of herself, she was now known by the whole city. Everyday, someone needed something from her and she was happy to oblige, but Maker did she wish things were easier. She wished people didn’t need her as much as they did. 

She looked at her bed. Her cold and empty bed. So many people that looked up to her and yet not one to share a lonely night with. She sighed. There was only one person who-

A loud knocking on her door interrupted her thoughts. 

Barkspawn immediately awoke, standing tall, his ears perked up. At first, she tried to ignore it, but as the banging grew louder and louder, Elizabeth quickly stood up and headed towards the door. 

Groaning, she opened it. “What is t- Fenris?” She said, and gasped as she took a good look at him. He stood there, covered in blood, a hand on his side while he breathed heavily.  “Maker’s breath, what happened to you?” 

Fenris opened his mouth and took a tentative step forwards before collapsing, knees giving in. He would have hit the floor, if Elizabeth hadn’t caught him. “Shit. Bodahn! Orana! I need help.” She called out to the other members of her household as she began to drag Fenris inside her home. She didn’t make it very far - Fenris was heavier than he looked and Elizabeth was not strong enough to carry him up the stairs - opting to sit on the floor in front of the fireplace. 

She moved Fenris’s hand, and saw a deep gash cutting through his armor and his skin. Blood oozed from the wound, and she quickly covered it with her hands. 

“My Lady, what’s happened?” The dwarf asked as he approached them. 

“I need you to go into my room and grab some healing potions. And Orana, go bring me some towels and water.” 

She heard them scurry away and she turned her attention back to Fenris, who had fallen unconscious. Elizabeth had never been a good healer, and since meeting Anders she put less and less care into improving those skills, but she took a deep breath and closed her eyes as she focused, letting her magic flow through her. 

“C’mon, Fenris, wake up.” She said, opening her eyes and looking at him, hoping and praying it would be enough. Elizabeth gulped, her heart beating loudly the longer it took for him to show any sign he was alright. 

“Fenris, please.” She touched his arm, trying to stir him, as a panic settled within her. It wasn’t the first time she had seen him like this. The two of them had been injured in battle and taken a bad fall a lot of times. 

But it was different now, she thought. With all that had happened between the two, there was much she wanted to say. This was the first time in months that they had actually seen each other and if he was about to die here then-

Fenris groaned, and stirred and Elizabeth let out a sigh of relief. She removed her hand and noticed the wound had stopped bleeding though the flesh was still open. When Bodahn arrived with a potion in hand, Elizabeth was quick to give it to Fenris. She held this head up as she pressed the vial to his mouth and after a few sips, his skin mended itself back together. 

He was still asleep but there were no other signs of major injury. She breathed a sigh of relief. Maker, if something worse had happened, something beyond her skills…

She looked at her carpet, which was now stained with Fenris’s blood, but it didn’t matter. She and Orana could clean it later. She looked at the dwarf and said “Help me bring him upstairs. I’m not gonna leave him on the floor.” 

. 

Fenris woke up with a groan and a headache, as he sat up on a bed far more comfortable than his own. 

He put a hand on his forehead as he looked around and quickly realized he was in Hawke’s room. 

A fact made more obvious when he saw her standing at the foot of the bed - her bed - with her arms on her hips and a frown on her face. 

“Hawke-”

“How are you feeling?” They both spoke at the same time. 

“My head hurts but it will pass.” He meant to say more but he wasn’t sure what to say. The frown lifted from Elizabeth’s face as she nodded. 

“Good.” She crossed her arms. “Now, care to explain what in the Maker’s name was all that?” 

“Uh…what do you mean?” He scratched the back of his head, as he thought about what to say. 

“Fenris.” She began to walk closer to him. “You show up in my house in the middle of the night, bleeding, and then pass out in front of me without another word.” Elizabeth spoke in a worried tone. “What in the Maker’s name were you doing?” 

Fenris took a deep breath. “I was on a job. I got ambushed and I…came here for help.” 

“Where did this happen?” 

“Lowtown.” 

“Why didn’t you go to Anders, then?” 

He scoffed. “I wasn’t going to go to Anders.” 

“He’s a better healer.”

“Well, I didn’t want to go to him.” 

“Maker.” She said under her breath, rolling her eyes. “Stop being so stubborn!” 

“I don’t understand what your issue is.” 

“Don’t understand-” Elizabeth threw her hands in the air. “My issue is that you and I both know I’m not the person you should come to for healing. What if you had a grave injury? Something that wasn’t fixable with a healing potion? What if I couldn’t stop the bleeding? What if you had-” She stopped herself, but it didn’t take much for Fenris to understand what she meant to say. 

“I apologize.” He said, looking at her. “For upsetting you.” 

“I’m not upset, I’m just…” She rubbed her eyes. “Don’t do this again.” 

“I won’t. I promise.” 

“Good.” 

An awkward silence stood between them. She was right. Fenris should have gone to the other mage, in fact, he had thought about it. Despite their differences, even he could admit Anders was the better healer of their little group. 

But his feet had dragged him to her house almost on instinct. 

A year had passed, and things were still…weird between them. Fenris didn’t blame her. There was much he wanted to say but the words seemed always stuck on his throat. He wanted to apologize for that night and say he wished he never left. He wanted to say Hawke rarely left his thoughts.

He looked at her left arm, uncovered and heavily scarred from her fight with the Arishok and he wanted to say that that night he had been more worried than ever, when he thought she might die. 

Fenris wanted to say that the real reason he had walked over to her house, bleeding, was because he wanted to see her. Because ever since she became Champion, they barely had time to talk and she became more and more reclusive and he missed his friend. 

Elizabeth was not a good healer, but Fenris knew she wouldn’t let him die. 

Instead, Fenris stood up as she took a step back. 

“I should be on my way.” He said and she nodded.

“I’ll walk you to the door.” 

He moved past her, grabbing his things which she had placed next to her desk. The two walked in silence down the stairs. Barkspawn looked at him with big eyes but stayed put. Fenris chuckled and shook his head, as Elizabeth opened the door for him to leave. 

“Be careful out there, will you?” She said. “And go see Anders in the morning.” 

“I’ll do my best. Thank you, once again.” 

“Of course. Good night.” 

He gave her a stiff nod, and walked back home.

one thing i like about the difference between elizabeth&fenris and anneliese&alistair is that. anneliese and alistair are very much would have fallen in love with each other in any universe and any timeline and in any circumstances. elizabeth and fenris, whoever, i think are very much a couple due to the right place right time. even if kirkwall is a shithole at the peak of what essentially is a dictatorship, it was still the right conditions for them to fall in love. and its sort of a situation where both of these couples are kinda like. red string of fate situation going on,imo, but they play out very differently

anyways fenris and elizabeth make me feel a lot and their relationship is very precious to me because its all about the mutual support you know. the like, having someone who's got your back through thick and thin. even if they argue, they know that they'll make up

and its kinda funny because i dont think either of them expected that to happen when they first met. fenris was a little suspicious because of the whole mage thing, and elizabeth was a little 'maker, he hates mages....' wary of him but as they start woring together its that sort of like. oh you're not so bad. and we're actually not that incredibly different.

and from that, they actually do become friends. elizabeth's always going to that goddamn mansion to play wicked grace and diamondback, and he's always calling her to go do some mercenary work with him. they talk a lot, they spend a lot of time together even if its just drinking. its from that friendship that they start catching feelings because wow, if i hang out with this person almost every single day of the week, i think smthg might happen.

i think its important that they're friends first, because even when they're in that awkward post break up phase, their friendship remains. yes, elizabeth's still hurting a little from it, but at least she's glad she hasnt fully lost him, she still has her friend that she cherishes a lot, even if nothing else happens between them.

Summary: A reunion between Fenris and Hawke after five years apart.

A/N: This was based on the prompt 'Against All Odds' from @loveofdragonage. to be honest, this is like a redux of a fic i have been planning for some time.

Years ago, if anyone had told Fenris he would fall in love with a mage, he would scoff at them. After all he had gone through at the hands of Danarius, he wanted distance from everything that had to do with magic. 

Mages had taken everything from him - his life, his freedom, his memories. He would not associate with them. 

That used to be what Fenris believed in, until he met the one mage who changed everything - Elizabeth Hawke. 

He still wasn’t sure how it happened. The two would constantly clash when talking about magic and yet, Hawke would still lend him a listening ear when he needed. She helped him when he called and in turn, he did the same. 

Maybe it happened over the shared bottles of wine, or the games of cards, or the long conversations. Slowly, but surely, Fenris had fallen for Hawke. 

In her, he had found a purpose, a reason for living. Had it not been for Hawke, he would have left Kirkwall long ago, but now he considered the shithole of a city his home. 

And when he least expected it, Fenris had all of that taken from him once again, this time, through a letter. 

‘Fenris. 

I don’t know how to explain this but something happened. Hawke was helping the Inquisition. We were in a bad place. She sacrificed herself to give us time to escape. 

She’s gone. I’m sorry.

Varric.’

If anyone asked Elizabeth how she managed to survive for so long in the Fade, she wouldn’t be able to answer them. 

Perhaps it had been spite, or sheer force of will. Perhaps the Maker was real and He wanted to play games with her. 

Perhaps it was because she was Elizabeth Hawke and surviving the Fade seemed just like the sort of thing she would get into. 

Regardless of how or why Elizabeth lived. And she was tired. 

The Fade was no place for mortals. Fighting demons who looked like your worst fears quickly wore her thin, and by the Maker, she missed her life. 

Her family and friends were constantly on her mind. That she once again caused them pain plagued her thoughts. She avoided thinking about Fenris’s reaction. 

Elizabeth wondered, if she just let the demons take her, would she finally have some peace? She was already in the Fade, where would her soul go? Was she doomed to stay there forever? 

No. She had to get out of there. 

Somehow, she would find a way. 

. 

Fenris has been approached by that boy, Feynriel. He claimed to have met Hawke in his dreams and she was asking for help. He almost slammed the door on his face. 

He was tired of hoping. 

And yet, when Feynrielf said he had a plan, Fenris found himself agreeing to help. 

It was a terrible idea, he had told him, as he worked. Trying to force a tear in the Veil would only lead to trouble. And if it did work, what could guarantee that Hawke would find them? 

It was not going to work, and he would only get disappointed again. 

He turned his gaze away, as the smell of Merrill cutting into her own flesh filled his nostrils, as she worked alongside Feynriel. Of course bringing Hawke back would be the thing to get him, Isabela, Aveline, Anders, Merrill, Varric and Carver to work together after all those years. 

A green light covered the room, and Fenries readied his sword. A figure walked out, stumbling, before falling on the ground. Merrill held the body and he heard a gasp as she turned them around. 

It couldn’t be.

For the first time in…Maker knew how long, Elizabeth felt the warm touch of someone else.

It all happened so quickly.

She had heard a familiar voice. It asked her to follow and thought it could have been yet another demon trying to tempt her, Elizabeth could feel that this time, she had to listen. 

The more it spoke, the more she recognized it. It was Feynriel. Maker, had her plans worked? 

Elizabeth began to sprint as she saw a small light. The voice beckoned her to it and soon, she stopped right in front of it.

‘Go forwards.’ He told her. ‘We’re all waiting for you.’ 

With her eyes closed, she stepped into the tear, tumbling back into the world of the living. 

She was met with Merrill’s face looking over her, her big green eyes filled with tears as she looked at Hawke. 

Elizabeth turned her head, and saw the faces of all of her friends. 

“Maker’s balls…” She heard Varric whisper next to her. 

“Varric…are you crying?” 

The dwarf gave her a smile, though the tears still ran down his face. “Yeah. I am.” He said as he grabbed Hawke’s hand. 

“Shit.” She heard Isabela say. “It’s really you.” 

“I can’t believe it.” Anders whispered. 

“Sister…”

She looked around, all familiar faces looking at her with awe and sappy smiles, as they gathered around her. Before she could say anything or even attempt to get up, she saw Fenris push past everyone, standing right above Hawke. 

He dropped to his knees, and without a word, enveloped his arms around Elizabeth hugging her.

“Is it really you?” He whispered in her ear. 

“It is, Fenris.” She answered, as she hugged him. “I’m back.” 

. 

For the first time in five years, Fenris and Elizabeth were once again sleeping on her bed. 

Though, truly, she was the only one who slept as Fenris watched her. He was still waiting for the moment where he would wake up from this dream, as with each breath she took, the reality dawned more upon him. 

Hawke was alive, and she was back and she was there. With him. She looked different - her brown hair was much longer, her skin looked pale and sunken and there were these weird green markings that swirled in her arms.

But it was still his Elizabeth.

“Fenris.” She whispered.

“Yes?”

“Go to sleep, love. I can feel you watching me.” 

He let out a small chuckle before tightening his hold on her, afraid that she would slip from his grasp again. There was much he wanted to say and ask, but that could be done later. 

For now, he was content to lay there and have the best night of rest in five years.

been thinking about fenris and elizabeth post da2. i think they officially get back together as a couple at least a year after the explosion and its kinda like. by that point, varric's narration has come true, everyone has kinda left but fenris. and its not like fenris was like yeah im gonna stay with you he just kept going along with her. and elizabeth doesnt question this for a Long time bc she has too much shit going on in her mind. but eventually it does come the question of you know you can just go you dont have to be here and fenris replies with i know. and elizabeth, is not that she wants him to go, but its just they never adressed the wolly mammoth in the room (bc frankly an elephant is not big enough) so shes like ok what are we doing then type deal. and i think its from there that they adress what they had years ago, that they both still have feelings, elizabeth also admits she still. feels smthg about meredith and she does feel bad bc shes dead ans she also loves fenris but i think at this point given everything that happened, fenris is like. ok about it(his "competition" is dead anyways but i also i do feel like he'd understand it.) and cue all the things fenris says in act 3 and they officially rekindle their relationship.

but also important to point out that they do still have that kiss in the gallows bc at that point it was like "oh i dont think either of us are surviving this so lets do it" and then thats also something they adress later
