Challenge on Infinite Earths - Day 1 [Hogwarts]
Care of Magical Creatures didn't use to be one of Annabeth’s favorite classes. It was all right, she supposed. There was something quite gratifying about the adoring look you’d get from some of the animals after caring for them, even if their needs could be harder to decipher than the blank crystal balls in Divination. At least Care of Magical Creatures could be interesting, depending on what they were learning about.
Like unicorns, for instance. During one particular class one cloudy day, Annabeth managed to develop a sort of fondness for unicorns…
After spending most of the lesson drilling them in on the uses of unicorn hair and all the theory stuff, the professor was dividing the class, a mix of Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs, into two groups for practical work: girls and boys. Girls would handle the adults, while boys were with the foals. The students weren’t cooperating much, staring at the unicorns’ gleaming coats.
Annabeth herself had only taken a brief glance. She was distracted, thinking about a new spell they’d learned in Charms. She hadn’t gotten it quite perfect yet…
“Annabeth!” Her cousin, Malcolm, nudged her back.
When she shot him a sharp look, he just shrugged and grinned. Malcolm was easygoing even for a Hufflepuff. He needed to be, when he was dealing with Annabeth. He was one of the few people who could drag her away from her books without getting a wart-covered nose.
“Go on – the girls are going forward.” Malcolm nodded at the girls who were heading for the unicorn herd.
Annabeth rolled her eyes before following. While some of the other girls squealed about how lovely the unicorns were, she just stroked them calmly, observing. The unicorns were sweet, nudging her hand and neighing, but Annabeth found it terribly boring.
“Now, boys, since some of you are doing well, you’ll move on to the adults.” The professor was talking again. “How about… Jackson, go on.”
Percy Jackson sighed under his breath, dropping his arm to his side. The foal he’d been paying attention to whinnied in disappointment. Percy gave it one quick pat on its nose before moving away. The closest adult unicorn happened to be Annabeth’s.
“’Scuse me,” he muttered, reaching over to rub the unicorn’s nose.
To Annabeth’s interest, the unicorn seemed to react even more warmly to his touch than hers. It stretched its neck out, trying to nuzzle him. Percy leaned back to avoid being impaled by unicorn horn.
Her curiosity piqued, Annabeth studied him critically. She knew Percy, of course. A fourth-year, and often cited as the cause for Hufflepuff, his house, losing last year’s House Cup. Judging from the way he was acting now – quiet, keeping a fairly low profile – she guessed he didn’t meant to make trouble on purpose. It just came naturally to him.
Percy was stepping back. “Want another go?”
When Annabeth took his place, the unicorn whinnied pitifully, stretching its head out in Percy’s direction.
“Seems to like you more,” Annabeth said drily, offering him the spot again.
A faint blush settled on Percy’s face. “Yeah…”
Annabeth watched him carefully. He didn’t seem to be doing anything special… But another unicorn was ambling over, vying with the first for Percy’s attention. She caught sight of another unicorn staring in their direction, its ears pricked, and she couldn’t help but laugh. “Jackson, what kind of unicorn food are you carrying around with you? You’re attracting them like moths to a flame.”
Percy was looking mildly flustered, his attention divided between two unicorns who were now trying to nudge the other away. Annabeth took pity on him. She nudged one of the unicorns, leading it away towards another girl. When she came back, she looked at Percy expectantly.
“Nothing,” he said, in reply to her earlier, joking question. “Unless they like Chocolate Frogs.”
He took a few out of his pockets and waved them at the unicorn. It blinked, confused.
That didn’t cut it with Annabeth. “Really though. Why do they like you so much?”
“Long story,” he said evasively, not looking at her.
He was obviously not well-acquainted with Annabeth Chase if he thought that could put her off. She had latched onto something she wanted to know, and she wasn’t going anywhere until she had her answers.
“I just seem to have a way with horses.” Percy grimaced a little to himself, looking distant, before his gaze focused on Annabeth again. “Maybe I’ll tell you later. Not now. Like I said, it’s a bit of a long story…”
“Hufflepuff and Gryffindor don’t have any other classes together,” she reminded him. “Unless you’re taking Arithmancy, which I doubt?”
A faint glimmer lit up his eyes. “I was hoping you wouldn’t remember that.”
The unicorn whinnied, rubbing its nose into Percy’s hand. He patted it absently, his eyes still steadily trained on Annabeth’s. Her crossed arms and sharp grey stare told him she wasn’t going to let this go.
“How about I start the story next Care of Magical Creatures lesson?” he asked.
He looked slightly embarrassed. “Um… Detention today and tomorrow,” he confessed. “Blew something up in Potions.”
She scowled. “I feel like you’re doing all this on purpose.”
Percy looked up at the sky innocently. "Huh, looks like there's going to be rain this afternoon."
Annabeth nearly stomped her foot. "Jackson. We're not talking about the weather."
A slight grin turned up the corners of his mouth. “You really want to know?”
She gave him a what-do-you-think look.
“Well, okay…” Percy stroked the unicorn’s nose once before dropping his hand. “I’ll tell you.”
He suddenly darted away, calling out behind him as he ran, “Next Care of Magical Creatures!”
Annabeth’s mouth fell slightly open. She finally looked around and saw that the class had ended. Most of the other students were heading for their next classes. Flustered for once, she needed a moment to remember her next lesson. On the way, she grudgingly admitted that Percy had won this time. She’d have to wait, then.
But at least the next Care of Magical Creatures was bound to be interesting.
{ A/N: So, this is Day 1 (prompt: Hogwarts) of Challenge on Infinite Earths. Well, a modified version of the challenge. My friend Mel adapted it into a sort of race to see who completes it first, instead of a 30-day thing. (Her comments at the bottom have some explanation of this.) Like her, I'm not sticking to one ship/set of characters. I think I'll be going with PJO/HoO and Homestuck.
With this PJO/HP crossover, I'm not quite sure about the demigod status. I imagine that being a demigod wouldn't be much more special than ordinary wizards, except with some bonuses, like Percy's connection for horses (I think he can do wandless "magic" with water too) or Annabeth's natural intelligence. Although some characters (like Malcolm) are normal wizards instead of demigods... Honestly, the crossover is still a bit blurry in my head, sorry. }
