ok so these questions have been eating me up. I love the world-building and intricacy of GS so much, and I can't help but draw some plotlines to possible conclusions, past the ending(s) that are provided. also: I know that answering these kinds of heavy what-happens-if and future event questions can reveal a lot of authors' cards that they don't desire to reveal. totally makes sense if your answer is that the mystery is part of the story or that you are not comfy answering. if you are comfy answering any or some, that would be awesome, but totally no pressure!
ok question time lmao (sorry if their jumbled) (also mega spoilers incoming) I was wondering, what happens after lance dies of, presumably, old-age, or even just an accident? is access to the mainframe just gone? would he be able to, knowing he would die soon, relink his consciousness to avalon to preserve mainframe control? I also wonder, assuming King was made for the purpose of keeping all these world-wide techs functioning cohesively, if, without properly disconnecting all the different domes from the mainframe before his death, that suddenly not having that unifying AI could cause a lot of potentially catastrophic fallout in the wake of his death.
aside from me wondering the practical consequences of him dying, I'm also imagining a world where my best boy is semi-immortal and lives on through the mainframe, while morgan is just gone forever from dying of old age. either he dies and mainframe access is gone (assuming that's true) or he doesn't and he's alone. again. aaaaaaa
Lance dying would cause fewer immediate issues than it seems - just because he has given over a lot of control to the domes. So it's not that everything would stop functioning, because he isn't actively controlling everything himself anyway. The main issue is that yes, they would lose access to the mainframe without him and if they ever DID need access or needed to access something he does control...it's a problem. But he's far from his natural end, if you will.
So humans do live longer in this setting. I've mentioned before the Keres canonically is only suppose to look maybe 10 - 12 years older than Caissa because he's just actually not that old within the setting. Humans on Arcalis have a much longer "prime" than modern humans. I drew him looking older because I didn't want it to be confusing and I didn't want to have to explain all the crazy stuff with aging and time differences because years are shorter. So Lance's natural lifespan is still pretty long.
I imagine that Lance will eventually construct a biosynth body for himself to transfer his consciousness into so he can stick around and keep an eye on things (I don't think he'd just transfer his mind back into the mainframe or something unless it was an emergency.) But that is the next thing - if there was an emergency and he was dying I think that's what he'd do. But if he suddenly died from an anvil falling out of the sky onto his head. Yeah. That's an issue.
There might be some kind of system redundancy where a version of the original King could be rebooted somehow but I never really planned that out in any real capacity.
And yeah, lifespans are always tricky when you have one really long lived person in a pair. King of course is very used to outliving people and being alone and so I think he'd cope with losing his partner and eventually finding someone else (presuming the biosynth body option). But I mean that's also assuming that technology on Arcalis never advances and they don't ever get to a point where they don't need the mainframe.
If he ever got to a point where he was NOT needed and he was beyond Deimos's natural life span. He might not stick around, whatever that looks like.
Deimos because i am GAY
dude I want him mso bad bruh
