Chae woke with his head pounding and gasping to catch his breath, lungs weak from the spontaneous burst of magic that had inexplicably entered into his mind. Ever since he was a child and his magic first began to develop, his connection to the spirits that fueled his magic always turned against his body and attacked inwardly in an allergic-like reaction. His lungs burned, struggling to take in air, he was on the floor, crawling backwards until he felt something hard hit behind him, a wall, a tree, he couldn’t tell, too busy frantically scrabbling through his pockets, trying to measure his breathing that came out in staccato wheezes.
He was light headed from the lack of consistent oxygen, still reeling and unaware of his surroundings from the magically induced vision. Were there still hooded figures nearby? Was that real or was that the vision? Echoing quacks sounded in his head as he gripped at the fabric of his shirt over his chest, feeling his heart beating hard and rapidly beneath his palm. Was there blood or was that part of the vision too? His other hand found what he was looking for, an inhaler, and he quickly inhaled the dispensed natural medicine that would hopefully relax his lungs so that he could breathe. In this moment, they were spasming against his will, making it impossible to breathe normally, some short, some long, all produced wheezing sounds as he was intaking just barely enough not to pass out entirely. He raised his hand holding the inhaler up but another spasm made him drop it and his panicked movements knocked the device further away when he tried to catch it.
Bad luck, always plagued with bad luck. Chae hissed, the quick movement of trying to catch the inhaler made him too dizzy, so dizzy he couldn’t see straight. He grit his teeth and fumbled hands skidded across the ground in search of it, half blinded by the blur of tears as the pain of his lungs flared across his entire abdomen.
