Everyone deserves to be happy and to live their best lives. a-spec people aren’t hurting anyone, and absolutely deserve to be seen, heard, and treated with kindness and respect.

Yeah I've been tryong to work my way through the first one for the past several months but everything about the setting just feels so hostile I have to be in the right mindspace to do it at all. Same on saving as many non-humans as possible.

I tried once, before, months ago. I got to the first village, and I think after uncovering about the third rape I put it aside, because ... really? Is this necessary?

But I have some time off at the moment, so I decided to just commit to it and get through it. It’s got complex lore and history to it, which I like, and honestly the combat controls are amusing (I feel like I just have to poke Geralt with a stick occasionally to remind him to keep fighting).

It does seem to be the arsehole world, though. I mean, you’re swimming in racism (even if it’s against fantasy ‘elven’ and ‘dwarven’ races) and misogyny the whole way through. If I hear one more bit of ambient dialogue about spousal abuse, I’m going to start using my sword on the people saying it.

They keep saying witchers should be ‘neutral’, but The Order of the Flaming Rose ... seems really keen on murdering people, and the Scoia’tael ... seem mostly to be objecting to being murdered, so this doesn’t really feel like the kind of situation where you can stay neutral. I just keep throwing money at the elves and rescuing witches and hoping eventually they’ll let me overthrow the government or something.

Have a look at The Dance and the Dawn. It’s a competitive Gothic fairy tale RPG in which the players take on the roles of the Ladies of Ash, come to the dreadful Ice Queen’s palace to court the enigmatic Lords of Ice. (The Lords need not be men, as several of the included scenarios illustrate, so you can totally make it gay.) Conflicts are resolved via tactical ballroom dancing, represented with chess pieces on a board. Definitely one to check out if you’re a fan of Gothic architecture, tragic duels, ladies with Byronic angst, or some intersection of the three.

(Also available in LARP scenario format, if you happen to have fifteen friends who all have a lot of time on their hands.)
