“I don’t think Detective Valentine likes me too much.” The young Detective spoke up, swirling creamer into their coffee.
“Old Nicky? What makes you think he ain’t a fan of yours?” The grizzled cop asked over his black coffee.
The Detective, Silvia, takes a long sip from her mug. “He keeps scowling at me. It’s like he doesn’t want me on the force.”
“Detective Valentine’s been through a lot, Greeny. And he’s an -”
“He’s a what?” A third voice joined the conversation. Nick Valentine, in his long grey duster, shirt and tie, stood in the doorway. His brown hair was slicked back, his face clean shaven.
“I was telling greeny here about what a charming personality you have, Valentine.”
Nick looked past his old friend and colleague, watching Silvia as she observed the small interaction between those who had seen more than her. Nick stood fast in the doorway, his hands in his pockets, his eyes staring into Silvia’s.
“You mind telling me what led to this line of conversation, Kid?”
Silvia stared at him, “I… Sir, I…” She stumbled over her words, the confidence she’d had during her training and final exam had evaporated when she entered the force and was all but gone when Nick struck her with that stare.
“She doesn’t think you like her too much, Nicky boy.” Nick’s glaze briefly turned to the old cop, if looks could kill Nick would have been behind bars long ago. Nick had never liked the nicknames his fellow officers gave him. They felt childish, but maybe that was the point. David had been one of the first men on the scene of Jenny’s death.
Nick shook his head, dispelling the thought. He looked back at the young Detective. “You’re on the Fen’s Phantom Case, right?”
Silvia nodded her head, it was her first real case. She’d only been on the case a few days. But this guy, she shuddered at the thought of all the people he’d already killed.
“Be careful, guys like him like to play games with the detectives.”
She smiled at him, it was the first time he’d seemed human since she’d met him. He turned and left the kitchen.
Silvia downed the last of her coffee. Nodding to the older cop, she left behind Nick and preparing to follow her next lead. She might be green to the unit, but she wasnt going to let that get in her way.
