Danny shifted a little in his seat at the question, oblivious to the fact that his mom was in earshot. “My mom? I... well, I mean, I love her. She’s my mom, and she’s... she’s always done her best to be there for us. Me and Jazz, I mean.” He gave a little, weak laugh. “She can be kinda intimidating sometimes, because she’s really good at what she does, and... well, I mean, I’ve been on the other end of things a few times, back before she knew. She’s definitely a better shot than Dad, I can say that for sure.” Another weak laugh to disguise his discomfort. “But... I mean, even despite all that... I know she didn’t know, and... I still love her. I’m... I’m hoping that now that she knows and... you know... accepted me, that things won’t be quite as awkward. Well, I mean, they are still awkward, but that’s mostly my fault. Old habits, you know?”
Danny sighed. “It’s funny, because in some ways, I was a little closer to Mom, but in others... I kind of felt like I had to keep my distance. It’s... kinda hard to reconcile that, you know? There were times I was legitimately frightened of her. It’s probably why I still... still have a little trouble opening up sometimes. The dreams probably don’t really help, but... I can’t blame her for those. I just hope things get easier. I miss... I miss being able to talk to her without feeling like I have to hide stuff.”
