misconception: he didn't shoot first
THINGS GEORGE LUCAS SAYS.
my greatest qualm with the special editions and with george lucas, is this exact thing, honestly. it’s not even because i’m a han solo fan, or the fact that it’s a really poor editing job with the way his neck pretty much breaks to dodge greedo’s shot. it’s not because ‘han shot first’ has turned into a meme or become the number one joke throughout the fandom. it’s because this was a pivotal part of han solo’s character arc. this is the first moment you really see what type of man he is and it’s a setup for something at the end of the film that really ties up his personality and how he works.
han would absolutely shoot somebody first, if he knew there was no other way to get out of it. one of the first things he says to greedo suggests that this isn’t the first time they’ve met like this, and the way greedo verbally threatens him while holding his blaster on him??? could also be a major hint that this is one of the many times that the rodian has been sent out to collect on han for jabba the hutt. there wasn’t any talking him out of it, greedo had specifically said that he was here to get the credits, or to kill him, so as anybody who felt threatened would, han shot him before greedo could get his shot off.
like i said in my previous post: han solo isn’t a selfish man, but the thing about that is… he didn’t survive as a smuggler in this galaxy for so long, without putting himself first in these types of situations. greedo was inevitably going to shoot him. han took the opportunity and shot him first in order to save himself. as would anybody, like i just said. and that’s not a bad thing, it doesn’t take away from his character, and it certainly doesn’t make him a bad person like george lucas tends to think it does. chewbacca was already heading to docking bay 94, greedo had specifically waited until it was just him and han to approach him. while han had no direct reason not to start a heavy blaster fight in the middle of the cantina, he also wasn’t about to let innocent civilians get hurt? so he ended things before they could escalate.
this is the biggest and most important part of his character: that he is very willing and very ready to kill someone, in order to save himself. to save himself. nobody else, directly. this was something that was between han and greedo and he felt threatened, and took care of that. but throughout the movie, you see other examples to back this up. other evidence of him merely doing things to care for himself and not anybody else. “they’re gonna kill her.” “better her than me.” // “more wealth than you can imagine.” “i can imagine quite a bit.” // “i’m not in this for your revolution and i’m not in for you princess, i expect to be well paid, i’m in it for the money.” etc. then of course, going out of his way to not only return the reward to the rebellion, to leave this huge bounty on his head, but also to help luke. a vital turning point in his character arc.
i don’t care about the meme. i don’t care about the fandom battles to determine who shot first. i only care about it being such an important determination of character for those who are newly introduced to han solo.
