Ferdinand VI

Ferdinand VI (1713 – 1759), called the Learned (el Prudente) and the Just (el Justo), was King of Spain from 9 July 1746 until his death in 1759. He was the third ruler of the Spanish Bourbon dynasty. He was the son of King Philip V and Queen Maria Luisa.

AU Fernando y Barbara de Braganza: Si la pareja real española, Fernando VI y su amada esposa Barbara de Braganza hubieran tenido sus ansiados hijos. Los veo como padres cariñosos que les brindaron la mejor educación a sus hijos y una gran preparación para sus cargos.

Fernando (1733-1740) príncipe de Asturias. Murió en la infancia de viruela, aun que se dice que Isabel de Farnecio lo enveneno.

María Isabel Teresa (1736-1792) fue el segundo retoño de los reyes y también princesa de Orange al casarse con Guillermo V de Orange-Nassau. Tuvo cinco hijos con su marido, pero solo dos tuvieron hijos.

Carolina Sofía (1738- 1783) fue la segunda hija y el tercer vástago de los reyes Españoles. Fue reina consorte de Dinamarca desde el año 1748 al año 1766, siendo la segunda esposa de Federico V de Dinamarca.

Carlos III de España (1739-1800) fue príncipe de Asturias y rey de España desde el año 1770 al año 1806. Se caso con la princesa Francesa, Victoria con la cual tuvo un buen matrimonio y ambos lograron tener ocho hijos en total.

Mariana de Borbón (1742-1770) fue la hija pequeña de los reyes y la mas querida. Fue conocida por su vida escandalosa teniendo unos cuantos amantes y organizaba lujosas fiestas en su residencia en el Real Alcázar de Segovia. Acabo muriendo a los veintiocho años de edad luego de dar a luz a un hijo ilegitimo, Maximiliano.

Portrait of Carlo Broschi called Farinelli by Corrado Domenico Nicolò Antonio Giaquinto, c. 1755, oil on canvas X

This painting is a portrait of the world famous soprano castrate singer Carlo Broschi whose stage name was Farinelli. He is wearing the cape of the order of Calatrava as in 1750 he was made a Knight of this important Spanish order by the king of Spain Ferdinand VI. The oval portraits of the King of Spain and of his queen, Maria Barbara di Braganza, hang in the background surrounded by a tripudium of nymphs and cupids. With his left hand the singer touches a page of music laying on the cembalo. In the background hangs also a self-portrait of the painter, Corrado Giaquinto. The portrait was part of Farinelli’s rich collection of paintings decorating his villa in Bologna, where he retired after a long stay at the court of Madrid (1737 – 1759).
