Something had changed about the look in Ferid’s once brightly crimson eyes. They once shown like Christmas lights, contrasted brightly against his pale, illuminous skin. Now, they appeared darker, as if a storm had brewed behind them.
Small things captured Crowley’s attention whenever they spent time together. Ferid did not drink as much as he should; his usual supplies of blood had nearly run out, and he refused to fill them, claiming he would eventually, brushing off Crowley’s concern as if it were nothing more than a speck of dirt on his shoulder. The usual jokes and playful banter that littered their conversations was lacking, as well. Ferid seemed more serious now, for lack of a better term. Always focusing on his plans, on what needed to be done. With time, even that began to fade, and that was when Crowley truly started to take notice.
Intimate moments between the two were few and far between, but they both savored the few times they had together. Crowley loved the sensation of being with Ferid, being so close, and Ferid - of course - loved the attention. Now, as the lay intertwined, Crowley can’t help but frown.
“Ferid, you’re being awfully distant. You have been for quite some time. Is something the matter?” he questioned, pushing platinum blonde hair out of the way, to see his lover’s face.
“Hm? Oh yes, I’m fine,” was the simple answer. Ferid had tried to add his usual playful lilt to his tone, but that only made Crowley frown even more.
Crowley made him promise then and there that Ferid would talk to him if he needed to, and Ferid happily agreed, sealing the deal with a kiss.
Now... it all made sense.
The fight had been going relatively well. A few vampire soldiers had died, but that was to be expected. Crowley dropped a human man’s body, taking a second to lick the rest of the blood off his fangs, when the call came through the air.
“Crowl-” was all that was able to be got out.
Crowley turned, and if his heart had still been beating, it would have stopped. He stared, seeing that three humans had managed to corner Ferid, and now a blade was pierced through his chest. A snarl, more beast than man, ripped through his broad chest, and within seconds, the attackers were dead, ripped to shreds. But not before the blade’s curse had been activated, and now all that remained was a pile of ash.
He collapsed to his knees, burning tears streaming down his face. I didn’t know vampires could cry, rang through his head, as he tried to comprehend what happened, as if he hadn’t just seen his lover reduced to dust in the blink of an eye.
That was two weeks ago, and Crowley sat in their once shared bedroom, debating what to do. He hadn’t moved in a few hours, and had been preoccupied with staring at the wall, reliving memories. Sunlight began to peek through the curtains, and a shimmer of light reflected off the gilded corner of a piece of paper, tucked so it barely sticks out of a drawer in the vanity. He carefully unlocked the drawer, taking a moment to unfold the paper before reading the neatly scrawled words.
Crowley, I haven’t been feeling the best recently. Living for two thousand years gets tiring, boring even. I have seen empires rise and fall, I have seen fashion trends and cultures shift, and yet... nothing has changed my world like you have. You gave me purpose again, a reason to hang on.
I’ll be honest, I had intended to let myself starve. But you... you looked at me with those gentle eyes of yours, you took my well-being into account, and you reignited that flame I used to have.
I hope one day I have the courage to tell you this in person. You mean so much to me. I love you.
-Ferid
The pain that Crowley felt was unlike any other.
“I love you, too,” he whispered. The sound to him seemed to bounce off the walls, as if a ghost had echoed it back.
