@ferocityshedanced: The violence seemed unnecessary in a lot of the scenes—like was it truly furthering the plot? Also what a questionable plot it was.

My main issue was a sense the film was set in the wrong place and time for what it was truly interested in tackling. For example, I am not sure what the point was in the film explicitly mentioning racial tension when that’s not what the plot was about. When the cast was practically completely white, with the three or four black actors that exist at all in this town mostly acting as props. It felt like an attempt to be true to some half-formed idea of what Ebbings, Missouri would be like without much conviction or follow-through or care--and it makes the film feel cluelessly and callously problematic, only to its detriment.

The violence I felt I understood, because in many ways that was what I think the film was about. Violence and how it’s enacted, when it’s enacted. The things people tell themselves about violence in order to feel justified, and the question of whether it ever really is. I didn’t often think the logic of the plotting was there and the film seemed too busy to really talk about this effectively. But I think there is an idea of a good story in Three Billboards. I just would argue that we have that story, and it’s called Twin Peaks.

@ferocityshedanced: I watched that the other day, wasn’t a great experience. Also I’m traumatized.

I’m not traumatized, but it does rather feel like it was misconceived. Down to the fact it was a movie honestly--I’m not entirely sure that it didn’t originally start out life as a pitch for a TV show that got cut down to a vaguely filmlike run time.
