Hung pictures of patron saints up on my wall, to remind me that I am a fool.
I read a rly good ferryangel fic by karmatens and the imagery was so powerful i had to get this out of my brain (its nsfw so im not gonna link it but you can find it on ao3) I messed around with new brushes and overall had a lot of fun on this!! the ferryman's cabin is rly monochromatic so i struggled most with that :') sir paint the walls or something in there goddamn..
as usual theres more versions under the cut!! ooo you wanna look at the lineart so bad oooo
Something so insane about the ferryman to me is how no matter what, their relationship with gabriel is going to hurt.
If it's built upon these mutually overwhelming feelings of love and lust and a pure need for another being, that alone would be seen as blasphemy. A sinner guiding bear endless souls of fallen humanity and gods brightest angel meant to keep hell in order. They're always going to be within reach. But will they always be able to meet? Will there be months, maybe even years in their shared eternities where they so much as get a glance at one another.
Even then, who knows what the fuck the council would've done. If a glance that even hints at sin could've been punishable, how in God's name would they even touch without risking diving wrath? Would a kiss without lips seal one of their fates?
Even a touch could mean torture if the council truly is that cruel. So why would either even dare speak of their feelings. Why would the ferryman dare tell a soul about how they truly feel and instead idolize him, touching stone and speaking into ink in the hours of eternal night in the hopes that maybe no one was watching. Probably shaking themself the entire time their emotions stain the page.
Then on the other side is gabriel, working and praying the council may show this sinner mercy and allow them to repent for their dutiful work throughout the centuries. But that's not how ferryman work. The game itself tells us that ferryman work until they die. They're either replaced or keep their rule of the ferry until someone else takes them out. One is rarely formed, so why allow this rare soul to escape their duty when another may not show for thousands, possibly millions of years? All while Gabriel knows that if he let's himself slip and fall right into love it might mean torture in order to repent for his sins. It might mean damning the one he loves to that ship forever, not even a chance at getting their happy ending.
And if its one sided love? God.
