Alright, so I was thinking... Asra goes away for long spans of time. Where he goes isn’t exactly known. BUT what if that ties in with his supposed bargain with the Devil? What if since he gave half his heart to the apprentice, he can only be around them half the time. Like Persephone and the POMEGRANATE seeds. Pomegranates are a big theme in the Arcana. That isn’t a coincidence. My theory’s kinda rough but it could work. We just need more evidence.

I got this ask juuuust as I was going to sleep, and I did spend a few sleepless hours just going “0.0″.

It’s plausible.  We’ve already got connections to tarot (obviously), and pretty strong evidence for characters representing the Four Horsemen or the chakras… mythological connections don’t seem amiss.

My first instinct is to think of the pomegranate more for Nadia or Lucio, as it’s present in both their aesthetics, but they’ve just returned - Nadia just woke up, Lucio just materialized. It’s not a seasonal or repeating event, as it is with Persephone.

(As far as aesthetics are concerned, if I recall correctly, there’s a pomegranate in one of Lucio’s portraits, either of himself or Mercedes and Melchior - and I believe it’s part of the design for the door to Nadia’s contemplation tower.  Mercedes and Melchior are the characters who appear most often with anything to do with pomegranates, but they’re also associated with Nadia and Lucio, just at different times - so the association still works by proxy.)

With Asra, he’s been more associated directly with discussions of hearts, but the pomegranate is used explicitly as a close facsimile - thematically and artistically.  Crushed in claws, how it resembles a partially devoured heart after Mercedes and Melchior have at it… as a substitute for blood in a pact which requires it - and Asra was the one that made the substitution - so there is a connection.  Asra’s absence is also a repeating event, possibly seasonal in nature, though we don’t know the timetable.

This did get me thinking about timetables again, though… Both in the Prologue and in Heart Hunter, I believe, Asra mentions “Soon I won’t have to go anywhere you can’t follow”… meaning that whatever stipulation of time, seasonal or not, is about to come to an end.  Which could be part of why he was so upset by the idea of the Apprentice dealing with the Devil - maybe he was about to be released from his terms, and now he’s worried about what terms the Apprentice would be subjected to.

It is a cool theory, but I’m afraid I don’t have any more evidence other than a general feeling of “Heeeeeeeyyyyy… you may be right.”
