Two Paragraphs: Fuduntu

One of my favorite OSs since I first found it, Fuduntu unfortunately hasn't found much use from me. And that's because its repositories run very slowly in China, where I do spend time. Against the field, I give Fuduntu an 8/10 and, against its own potential, the same score. As an OS, it's more limited in scope than Ubuntu, openSUSE, etc. in that it focuses on netbook and laptop usability instead of being a distribution that can do everything GNU/Linux can be made to do. It succeeds admirably in providing a good user experience. The reason I call it one of my favorites is because it is just fun to use. The layout, general visual scheme, speediness, and even its oddball development team contribute to a good impression of the OS.

I can attest that it works very well on laptops. Unlike other OSs that seem to lose direction, Fuduntu has remained focused and the work and polish shows. This same focus has drawbacks. Software is added at a somewhat slow rate to the repository because it's not intended as an all-featured OS. Certain applications may be hard to install. Also, the desktop environment and the base operating system itself (Fedora 15, I believe) are no longer officially supported, meaning the Fuduntu developers must apportion effort to maintaining those projects. That said, they have gotten Netflix working and do quite well supporting games. I may not be using Fuduntu myself, but I highly recommend it to anyone (who gets good server speeds from the repositories) looking for an attractive, functional OS that's also a pleasure to use.
