a fated encounter

The Lisianthus River was calm today, unlike Matteo’s heart. He sighed. It was cold, but the winter chill had not fully consumed the air. He dipped his foot into the river. It was surprisingly warm. He looked around. Everyone was busy preparing for their own winter celebrations, so they were not out galivanting in the woods. Not like him.
After another brief moment of hesitation, he stripped down. He folded his clothes neatly. The servants probably would not tell on him, but he still wanted as little evidence on them as possible. Then, he dove into the water.
His adoptive parents, the Griffiths, had warned him against going to the river alone. However, they had often gone as a family together. They weren’t scared of it in the same way many Elestrians were. It was a force of nature, but nature nonetheless. It was a part of the balance and therefore, not something to truly fear.
He was swimming calmly, engulfed in his thoughts. Then, he heard the sound of branches breaking. He stood up, looking for assailants. Damn, his sword was next to his clothes. Then, Matteo saw who was watching him and he covered his chest. A blush overcame his face.
Matteo released an unprincely scream.
