A quizzical answer by @feyuca circa 2015.
the mark of his name: 9, 5
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
GOSH YES. In a couple of ways.
First off, I originally only set out to write the much shorter fic thatserved as a prequel to this one (Silence in Heaven). That one ends with Willand Hannibal having murder dirty talk in a bar, but when I firststarted plotting it out, it ended way more like Mark: basically, Will andHannibal get mugged by a guy with a gun, Hannibal deliberately does nothing ‘becauseWill said no killing’ but really because he wants to see how much it willprovoke Will, and Will snaps and chases the guy down an alley and kills him.And then the face-punching and knife-threatening happens (no weird erotictorture though, that came later). I liked the scene as it played out in myhead, but I wasn’t able to convince myself that the Will in that story would gothat far, so I changed it to dirty talk and was like “welp, that was a funexperiment, not sure if I’ll write any more fic though!” And then I just keptthinking about it, and wondering how I might be able to get Will to that pointafter all.
The general idea of The Mark of His Name came from that unusedscene and from the idea of the first chapter (where Will has Hannibal follow the guyand then tells him to stop). When I started writing it, I pretty much only knewthose two things. In the earliest drafts (which exist only in my brain), theycome home after the drive and have a fight where Will basically tells Hannibal “youcan’t even kill me” and Hannibal threatens HIM with a knife, but I much preferthe direction I went with, where Hannibal is just patiently waiting.
I knew pretty early on that I was going to have Will decideto kill murderers, but I didn’t come up with the notion of him killing Hannibal’sstudents until a couple chapters in, when it just popped into my head as I wasfalling asleep one night. The bit where I described the idea occurring to Willlike he’d known it all along is exactly how it occurred to me.
Um… pretty much every scene in which Will and Hannibal touchor eyefuck each other was drafted in my head as a makeout or sex scene and thenwalked back on the page. I did this deliberately, because I wanted those scenesto read as erotic but not be explicitly sexual. In the original brain-draft ofthe scene where Will comes home, Hannibal is lying on a couch reading a book orsomething and Will literally climbs on top of him covered in blood and theymake out. The couch is ruined. Sorry mom.
In the last scene, I was going to have Hannibal give himselfthe stitches while Will wordlessly stood behind him with, like, burning eyes orwhatever and then walked off to bed. But then I decided that this particularWill wasn’t quite that much of a dick, and I liked the idea of Hannibal vibingon Will touching him again.
5: What part was hardest to write?
I definitely agonized the most over the last chapter, whichis probably pretty typical. It’s the only one where I repeatedly wrote bigchunks and then completely deleted them. Originally it had no Will POV in it atall, but I decided it needed some in order to feel like a real conclusion.
Another way to answer this question though: the hardest partto prep for was the torture scene, because I had to do a bunch of internetresearch to figure out a plausible place for a knife injury that wouldn’t besuper deadly, and although I can handle fictional gore just fine, when it comesto actual medical stuff I’m actually very squeamish. I got lightheaded a coupletimes just reading about knife wounds, and there weren’t even pictures!
Animals have rights too. But the same rights as humans?

Heyy!! I just found your comics and they're brilliant and hilarious! I love the zombie one with the "Dead End" hahaha. Have you ever considered compiling them?
Yes!!! Boomates was an idea I've wanted to do for a long time but haven't really found a way to make it; but now that I've gotten it going it's been very fun to make! I've drawn it in a way that if people wanted it enough I'd make a lil' comic book of it!
And wow I'm really happy you've noticed this, I've admired your art for a long time! O 3O
