✂ ── WHAT WE ARE
his parents express their disappointment. he can see it all over their faces, because he did not fulfill his purpose; he did not win the head hunt, losing it to a hunter far more experienced than he. he endures it with his head held high, though he nods, though he apologizes, and the shame is there. one of the senior hunters told him he got closer than he had any right to; jaeyong still doesn’t know if it was meant as a reassurance or an insult.
maybe he should be more worried-- worried that it isn’t his highest concern. maybe he should be more worried that daeyong’s ghost did not come back to haunt him-- that there is now reason to believe he isn’t a ghost at all.
no, he’s plenty worried, and he doesn’t care if it’s for all the wrong reasons. his instincts are trained for the sole reason of fighting the supernatural, but even they lead him back to huangjun. when he arrives him, he practically runs to drop off all his hunting equipment, then to his room to change, and then out the door.
he doesn’t get to huangjun’s apartment fast enough for his taste. he can’t shake the thought of him clinging to life after barely managing to fight off his ghosts, some injury capable of fatality if left untended for too long, waiting for him to return. he can’t shake the thought of arriving too late to save him. he practically runs down the hallway to his door, too.
seeing weixin coming toward him slows his pace, however, even with his eyes still wild and desperate, edging on an uncharacteristic amount of panic. what is he doing here? why?
no, he doesn’t really have to ask those questions, because he knows, for one reason or another, that the vampire is here for huangjun-- that he comes from huangjun’s apartment, and for a moment, he forgets that weixin didn’t spend the night as a vampire at all. for a moment, he fears he’ll find huangjun drained of his blood at weixin’s hand, but then some of his senses return to him.
he has half a mind to push past weixin regardless, because time is of the essence and he doesn’t have a moment of it to waste on a vampire, least of all this one in particular.
(this one, whom huangjun refuses to kill, whom he fears huangjun will never see as an enemy, whom he fears huangjun may already see as a friend.)
instead, he pauses in the hallway, because he’s plenty worried, but right now, it’s only for one reason. right now, nothing else matters.
“is he okay?”
