No one else is gonna care about this picture, but it means a ton to me. Daniel O’Connell (statued above) was the original thinker on passive resistance. He fought for civil rights for Irish Catholics before civil rights were a thing. He organized the normally rowdy and mercurial Irish Catholics into organized, peaceful protests that scared the spit out of British magistrates. Thomas Jefferson, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and other creators of change were influenced by the ideology and methods of Daniel O’Connell. I co-wrote a musical about him and spent a lot of time studying his life. What a privilege to finally come to his beautiful town and be where he was.
